I have a family by the name of TIFFEN or TIFFIN on the 1871 census at 103 Leyton Road, West Ham, Essex (RG10/1626/91/59).

The enumerator's writing is not good. Can anyone have a look to see if they can work out the father and son's occupations please. Also the mother's place of birth.

    Thanks

The father's occupation looks like Labourer to Stoker, but I am not 100% sure.

However, the wife's place of birth looks like Nfk, Lynn - so Lynn in Norfolk.

This is the occupation with the colours inverted

I am sure the first letter is a 'C' (same as in Colchester further down the page)

Not that you can tell particularly well from the 1871 census, but according to the 1881 census of West Ham (RG11/1707, folio 51, page 38) Margaret TIFFFIN is now a widow and her place of birth is Norfolk, Lynn, and now I can see that the 1871 census pob for Mrs TIFFEN does read Norfolk, Lynn. I think the occupation of George could be Labourer to Stoker?

Could the son's occupation be Eng. Cleaner? (Engine Cleaner). In 1881 there is a George Tiffin who fits the bill, who is a Loco Fireman, so he may have worked his way up the ranks. (RG11/1707/52/39)

Oh, well done Ann. The George you found in 1881 is the correct chap. I couldn't for the life of me work out what it could say.

Thanks Jan. All I could see was Labourer to Stores, which didn't make sense.

I have searched and searched for this family in 1861, but cannot find them :(

    Can anyone else see them?

I have found a couple of birth registrations in Islington, so am checking out baptisms. It may be that they were somewhere in Middlesex?

    I cannot find them either.
But if they were in Islington then piece 145 (Islington East) is missing
source - FMP's missing pieces of the 1861 census

No luck here either :( And I’ve got a family who should appear in the missing piece of Islington in 1861 :sceptical:
