Yep! So he was. I short changed the poor fellow.
Thanks very much for those Ann. As far as I can work out from all of the newspaper articles I think he started out in the 70th, which was raised in Droylesden 5 May 1860 and at some point transferred to the 78th, which was raised in Manchester 2 Nov 1860. I think the mention of the 7th is probably a misprint by the paper. I found a PDF on the Lancashire Record Office website and it says that there are no records remaining for the 70th or the 78th, typical!
I found that too and was about to say don't get excited.....
