Hi Dinah, My guess is 1900 to 1909. (Circa 1908). This is based on the round shirt collar, long suit jacket and the matching waistcoat and the white handkerchief protruding from the breast pocket.
My guess too. Early 1900 to 1912 or thereabouts. Nice looking young man I will say. Rounded coat hem as well.
Hello Dinah. I'm not too good on dating fashions. You might find from street directories how long the photographers were at Brompton Road. Useful if they were only there a short while. Not so useful if they were established for a long time. Happy hunting.
Just to add a bit of background to the photographer, William John STUART had studios at 47 & 49 Brompton Road, Knightsbridge from 1893 to 1911 and at 159 High Road, Balham from 1904 to 1917. Ergo, the date should be between 1904 and 1911. (Source: photolondon.org.uk/)
various members of the Stuart family had studios in 47 Brompton Road, as Jan says WJ & J Stuart were there 1904-1911; before this point the business was called Stuart Bros.
Thanks all, that's great. He's my Grandfather born 1883, so that would make him but about 25 in 1908. Wasn't sure whether this photo was him or my Great grandfather (who had the same name).
I'm thinking he looks young for 25, so I would think this photo was taken in about 1904, when he was 21
