Brilliant that the Minster put the note at the side of this christening but how sad for Hannah and her mother Frances! Wonder if they ever saw him again?

Very few of those transported were allowed to return at the end of their sentence.

If you like we can have a look for him but there a few John Barnes out there. If he was transported for life then he definitely would not be finding his way back. Even if he could return the cost would be astronomical.

Darned if I can find a John Barnes that would fit into this scenario. Found one who died in 1846 age 65 and another who died in 1826 age 45 (actually three but I think it’s all the same John Barnes). This would make both born c 1781 which would be the correct age. Nothing fits into transportation around the right time. I wonder if he didn’t get here at all.

The way read it is that Frances Collings had a child to John Barnes and that her husband ? Collings was transported. Doesn't mean to say I'm right though.:D

That's how I read it and I remember many moons ago reading, in a parish register, something very similar. It was along the lines of a lady having given birth to a son with the note "her husband having been transported over a year ago"

Now I cant even find a Collings/Collins that might fit the bill. Either too late, too early or, not knowing where he was convicted.
