Annabel, I'm not sure what info you already have on these folks, there is quite a bit on Ancestry Canada re: TFR and SHR. If you'd like the info do say. As yet I've not found Charlotte Marriott James after 1871.
Annabel, Henry JAMES's 2nd marriage image from the parish registers is on FMP. Both parties were shown as widowed. Janet
I wonder if this could be the death of Charlotte James? age is only one year out & Devon is next door to Somerset. 46.7 miles to Taunton. Leaves time for word to reach Henry so he can arrange his marriage to Katherine in Dec. Two Charlotte Jameses in 1871 -Devon, of similar age-St.Andrew? & Plymouth St.Andrew. Deaths Mar 1880 James Charlotte 57 Newton A. 5b-96
It looks as if the Charlotte JAMES whose death was registered in March 1880 at Newton Abbot was, according to an article in the Exeter & Plymouth Gazette headed TEIGNMOUTH, "the wife of a medical man of Ramsgate who died suddenly at her lodgings on Saturday night. She was in receipt of a monthly allowance from her husband and lodged with her sister in Hampton Place according to her landlady Mrs Martha RABJOHNS. The two sisters had lived with her for over 12 months." Janet
Thank you, for finding that. I'm blowed if I can find it, even with all the info. Can you tell me the date of the newspaper? Poor lady, he married pretty quickly after she died! At least he provided for her.
Mary Rance b 1823 seems to have moved out from Mrs Rabjohns' by 1881. I wonder what happened to her without her sister's allowance? I don't think she had any siblings left in the Uk
Newspaper article dated 10 March 1880, Annabel. I do think your Mary RANCE is likely to be the Mary A RANCE that Mealymoo found for you in post 7 at New Alresford, Hampshire. She is shown as living at Near Tan Yard, Head of household, unmarried, aged 58, Annuitant (which has been crossed out) and born Ealing. Cannot find her after that census record but will keep looking. Janet
Thank you I'll have another look for that newspaper article. I agree that is definitely her. But without her sister, she's hard to find. She could be living anywhere!
But............there's also this death reg same place and year as Charlotte's Name: Mary Rance Estimated birth year: abt 1824 Registration Year: 1880 Registration Quarter: Apr-May-Jun Age at Death: 56 Registration district: Newton Abbot. Vol 5b page 85
Oh yes sorry, I didn't read it properly. It all looks good, although Ealing is a bit out. It was more in the city, around Finsbury, that she was born
Rats! That edition is missing from the BNA, it only seems to have Fridays. But thank you for writing it out because I have just found a probate notice for Mary Rance of 2 Hampton Place who died 10th May 1880. The executor was her sister Ann, who seems to have remarried. How sad
It is there.......in the Western Times http://www. britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0000265/18800310/021/0003
Ann G BEVES looks to have married an Edward BEVES, a retired Carpenter, born c1801 at Stubbington, Hampshire according to 1871/81 census records of St Pancras. Edward BEVES & Ann Griffith WYNTER were married in the June qtr 1865 at St Pancras reg district. Janet
