So as requested here is my why I started on this frustrating (and occasionally enjoyable and rewarding ) hobby of ours.

Just after my father died in 2004 his brother, the last surviving, asked me to look for the name of his uncle who was killed in WW1. The only information I had was my uncle's memory of where and when, Belgium 1917 and that he could of been a machine gunner. Oh and the surname of Smith!!!!

Why oh Why oh Why did I say I would do it?

Welcome in WelchRegLost . Is Reg your Gt. Uncle or a Regiment?
As a lucky member of 9 separate Smith Familes at last count, I feel your pain.
Can you please give us a name birth date or year or do you not have any of that?
Perhaps the beginnings of your Father & Uncle re birthpace might give us a clue. The G'Dad's name may find the missing Gt. Uncle for us.

    Welcome to the forum.

Is that the Royal Welch Fusiliers? My father and grandfather both served there, my grandfather was later a gunner with the Tank corps. The RWF museum at Caernarfon castle is worth a day out.

On the other hand, my husband's family were from Wolverhampton, so I'm frequently found pottering around there. :)

To keep this as a welcome / Introduction thread would it be better if I started a new thread under Military History with all the information / research I have already done?
