The 1842 burial of William Church in Bozeat is annotated as shown. All I can read is approximately "Smashed by the shaft of a loaded [hay wagon] in contact with a wall while ???? to hold in the ??? House down a steep hill."

Any better offers? I had wondered if it was a loaded dray and he was delivering to an Inn.

    Endeavouring for the first ???

Could the word be horses rather than house?

Smashed by the shaft of a loaded wagon coming into contact with a wall while endeavouring to hold in the striken horse down a steep hill.

How about ‘Smashed by the shaft of a loaded waggon coming in contact with a wall while endeavouring to hold in the stricken horse down a steep hill’

It took me too long to write it out :D

Brilliant. It was the splitting of a word over a line (coming) which confused me and to get 'striken horse' was genius.

    Many thanks.
