I am looking for a William Clark who came to New Zealand in the 1870s. Information we have was he came from Kent, and would have been born around 1860. Aka William James Clark. His father was John Clark, and his mother Mary. Not much information I’m afraid. He is my g grandfather.
Hello Lois, do you have any other inormation which may help us to find your William? Perhaps his G'pts - Parents of John or Mary? Even the occupation of John might help to place them before immigration. Residence in N.Z. may help with finding newspaper items etc. Do you have death burial info. or anything to give ages of parents? How about siblings of William?
Hi Sis thank you for replying. We have nothing much on my g grandfather. He died in Masterton hospital 14 Apr 1911. Lived in Napier, and was buried here in the old Napier cemetery. He was called an engineer, fitter, worked on the railways. On one certificate he said his father was a coastguardsman. When he married in 1891 in Napier he had been living here 4 years. They put his age at 51 when ha died, and said he had lived in NZ 30 years. Different certificates give different ages. I realise certificates are only as good as the informant. Have a think about this one. On the 1871 census of Chatham Kent is a William J Clark. Father John mother Mary William is only 3 years old but his father, age 40 is described as a ‘Sending Man of Shipwrights’ Entry 10 GBC/1871/0910/0089 Found on Family Search
What information is on his marriage certificate? Does it have his age? Is he the father of your grandmother or your grandfather. If your grandfather did your grandfather enlist? There are 3 contenders marrying in Napier in 1891. Did he marry there? Who did he marry? Sorry to be so inquisitive but lots of little things that you think may not be of interest sometimes lead to a possible answer. Anything that you can think of. I did find his death notice on Papers Past though.
I looked into the William J Clark at Chatham, and unfortunately he is still there for the 1891 census, and our William was marrying Catherine Elizabeth McEwen in Napier. William was my grandmother’s father, she was Lillian Victoria Clark, born in Napier, 1893.On the marriage certificate it lists his father as John Clark, fitter, his mother Mary Clark, maiden name unknown. He was of full age, and born in England.Death certificate, father John Clark, coastguardsman, mother not mentioned. Born Kent England. Lived 33 years in NZ, and was 30 when he married. Describes him as a carriage fitter. My sister researched him years ago with no results. Many thanks for your time and interest. Lois
Found a William James Clark born 1862 Milton Kent, 3Q Vol 2a P 598. Couldn't find him after that. Ages not always being correct on death certs....
I also scrolled through CityArk for Milton next to Dartmouth & Northfleet looking for Baptism, then possible marriage of Parents. No luck 1858 -1862 but may have missed some due to other goings on here. I rn out of time before I could try searching instead for a James or James William.
I haven't been following this thread, just quickly scanning new posts as they arrive, and these two jumped out at me: There are two Miltons in Kent: Milton-next-Gravesend and Milton-next-Sittingbourne (aka Milton Regis). The first of these is at CityArk (I think), and the second is the one that gave its name to the registration district.
Saw that one, went by City Ark first hoping to get various parishes done. Unable to continue on after that. Not had a chance to get back since. Always ppossible the lad as not Baptised or done at a later date. I was aiming at a place for father perhaps working on the docks or similar.
