In my search for the identity of my maternal great grandparents, my grandmother indicated on US censuses that they were from Ireland Free State. What does that mean? Since I don't know where in Ireland she was from, I thought this might narrow it down.

    Hi Sue,

I don't think it is going to narrow it down much. It was all of Ireland except Northern Ireland. See:

Hello Sue - welcome to Top Dog :)

Why not post what you know about your grandmother - names, dates, family etc - and we can then see if we can help find her parents.

That's quite an interesting question, I think.

My mum was Irish, she always said she came from Eire.
Eire is what it was called (1937 - 1949) when she was a child living there.

The Irish Free State existed from 1922 - 1937 so would your grandmother have been a child in Ireland then?

The Irish Free State was the 26 counties of Southern Ireland that left the United Kingdom in 1921 and became a Dominion of the British Empire. The term "free state" was presumably based upon the example of the Orange Free State, which had emerged from the turmoil of the Boar War.
