The Great Britain, Births & Baptisms collection on FS has the following entry:
Male Bengough, born 10 November 1877
Birthplace: La Hogue, Merchant Marine, At Sea, Great Britain.

GRO has the following birth registration:
Harcourt George L Bengough, December quarter 1877. Woolwich 1d 1075

Before I splash out on a birth certificate, are the 2 records likely to refer to the same child?

Quite possibly as a) the quarter is correct, b) if the birth was registered as soon as the ship docked, chances are that it was at Woolwich and c) the surname is uncommon enough for it to be the same babe. ;)

This is what I thought. Reckon I'll splash out; if we are right he'll be the first relative I know of to have fought in the Boer War. :nailbiting:

If you know the name and year of the ship 'online microfilm of shipping lists' records.nsw.gov.au will take you straight to the manifest. The ships are listed in year and month order. Just for those who don't have a sub. ;) Like moi ;)
