The Knowledgeable One
There are some useful indexes in the 'Databases' section of their website:
http://www.
iwight.com/Council/OtherServices/Record-Office/Databases

  • Alehouse licences issued at Newport Borough Quarter Sessions 1766-1819 (index shows licence ref., date, and names of victualler and sureties)
  • Apprenticeship indentures from the 'Newport Borough Corporation collection', 1689-1835 (index shows apprentice name, master name, year and document reference)
  • Cowes Registry of Shipping (index shows ship name, number/year, and where built)
  • Paupers receiving relief from the Poor Law Union in 1868, 1878 and 1882 (index gives name, district, parish, age and 'pauper year')
  • Indictments 1768-1836 (index gives name, date and document reference)
  • Sacrament certificates 1673-1827 (index gives name, date and document reference)
If there's something of interest you can order a copy. Examples of each type of document are shown. There's also an index to Church of England marriages 1837-1900.

See also the 'Research Guides' section of the website for guides to sources for family history and house history.

Note that the Record Office offers some free searches, including 'a check of up to 10 years for a baptism, marriage or burial in the card index which covers the period 1538-1900. For baptisms, the names of any siblings within the same period will be supplied.' Details can be found here:

Yes, I did mention it in a private message but I thought the Record Office's services might be of interest to other Top Dog members too, hence this new thread.

I hope you hear back from the Record Office soon. I expect your enquiry is in a queue and will be dealt with when it is your turn.
