Hi, I have a new query for you to solve if you would be so kind?

    upload_2020-9-12_13-20-9.png

It has recently been bought to my attention that the handsome gentleman above - Jacob Solomon might be my 4th Great Grandad?

My Great Grandmother was - Sophia/Sofia Solomon, as you can see i have her being born in Romania from certain documents that i have. But as you can see Jacob was actually born in London from his mother Ruth Moses 1760 - 1825 also born in London?

    upload_2020-9-12_13-22-36.png

I have recently found out that i am related to two people from Ruth Moses through DNA on Ancestry. Please see below -

    upload_2020-9-12_13-28-23.png upload_2020-9-12_13-34-20.png

Can someone please clarify that Ruth Moses, Jacob Solomon and Philip J Solomon are indeed all of Isaac's Parents?

    Thanks so much

Nick sorry to ask but have you confirmed the ancestors of Sophie. Where was she and what did it say on the 1911 census and did it confirm her father on the marriage certificate?
Oops I see you have Issac as her father on the marriage certificate, was he a shoemaker?

Hi Amle, Thanks for getting in touch with me regarding Jacob Solomon. I have the father of my great grandmother Sophia as being Issac on her marriage cert.
I have him as a Tailor in 1903 the year of the marriage. On the 1911 census it has her birth place as Romania?

As explained before, how accurate is below? I have 2 DNA matches from Ruth Moses (5th Great Grandmother?) My problem is, ive always been told to work from maternal grandparents and work your way up. It states on Sophia's marriage cert that she was born im Romania, but if the DNA is correct then her father Isaac and indeed Jacob & Ruth were all born in London?

Perhaps it's me Nick but I see they are DNA matches but it doesn't mean their tree are correct only what they have worked them out to be.
Your matches what I can see are only with Issac Solomon's (1776). Are there any matches from Jacob Solomon (1794) and down?

Maybe the 1901 census with Sophie staying with her brother Philip is the right one. RG13/289 Folio 116 Page 28. He is a cabinet maker and both are Russian Subjects. Might Sophie be a Russian Subject even born in Romania as her family may have been Russian?

That's interesting and def a possibility! i want to try and rule out the DNA match through Ruth Moses?

    upload_2020-9-14_17-11-21.png

Phillip Solomon had a son aged 18 called Isaac Solomon in the 1871 census
Which makes Isaac birth of 1853 correct!

Jacob def had a child called Philip Jacob Solomon so thats correct.

Is this all starting to add up?

    Hi,

The 2 DNA matches are from Ruth Moses - 'Jacob Solomons' son?

Isaac appears to be Jacobs brother & Ruth Moses seems to be the mother?

BUT where i am stuck is the 'born' status for Sophia Solomon stating Romania? How accurate would this be?

HELP NEEDED. Id really like to confirm if Jacob Solomon is my 4th great grandad - fantastic photo of him to put in my pub IF he is???

I am not sure how you can prove that Sophia was born in Roumania, you have two censuses to suggest it. Have you tried to find records from Roumania or found any useful groups. Today I heard from someone who has just received death certificates of his ancestors in St Helena's, as he managed to get in touch with a helpful archivist there. I wonder if there is anything like this?
I never like working down a tree although sometimes it is all you can do. I wonder if it is worth getting any of the certificates for Isaac and Philip Jacob Solomon to see what they were doing and where?
Do you know what the evidence is for the children of Ruth, what proved the links. I never think a DNA link is enough. There could have been 12 children and who knows you are not descended from any of them. Even DNA has to be backed up, as there are many possibilities.

I think you have to remember that the ThruLines on Ancestry are only suggestions and that they are generated automatically by the software attempting to match the information in your tree with information in the trees of other people you have DNA matches with. Sometimes they are very useful suggestions and sometimes they aren't.

Ancestry invents 'potential ancestors' for you, based solely on what other researchers have put in their trees. Such suggestions might be correct, but they are not always and, in any event, need to be carefully checked out by reference to your own research.

Always keep an open mind, because the other researcher may have found some evidence that you haven't - or may have a different and valid understanding of the same evidence - but don't assume that their tree is correct as they might have jumped to a conclusion without finding any evidence or without interpreting the evidence correctly?

    Hi,

Please see below 2 census stating Sophia's birth place as being Romania and Sophia's marriage cer to her husband Hyman stating Isaac as being her father.

I have no more information on Isaac unfortunatley.

If I find an unexpected Thruline like this, I always do their tree myself to see if there are any mistakes or if the Ancestry computer has jumped to any conclusions. So I actually research their tree myself in an unsearchable private tree, from the match name up to their top ancestor, making sure that each mother's surnames at the GRO matches. to her marriage to the father and all the places make sense, and there weren't 2 families of the same name etc. Also that the top ancestor's children appear in other records together as siblings etc. If I look at records in isolation I don't spot potential problems and I have "confirmation bias". If there are no apparent mistakes then I can use it to help research the surprise connection to my ancestor, with help from potential uncles and grandparents and cousins I have found, in their wills and other records. :) :reading: (hoping I'm not teaching grandma to suck eggs)

Also, does this match appear in a cluster with other matches to the same branch of your tree?

I have checked LC & MF (DNA matches) trees and they look to be in order?
I'm still sceptical about Philip J Solomon being Isaac's Father? 2 census clearly says Sophia was born in Romania. How accurate are these census?

Its really frustrating because i cannot find anything that links Isaac to Sophia apart from the marriage cert. It would be handy to know if Isaac was indeed born in London or Romania?...
