William Watson was born in 1813 in Toothill, near Romsey, according to the 1851 census when he was living in Eling with his wife Elizabeth where he is a hoop maker HO107; Piece: 1668; Folio: 317; Page: 6 He married Elizabeth Nutborn in 1843 in Eling. I have the certificate. His father was James a labourer. Witnesses William Nutborn and Abraham Geas or Geus I suspect that James might be a brother (hopefully) of my mysterious ancestor Robert Watson (DNA lead) so I really want to know more about him but I'm a bit stumped where to look, although surely Toothill must be clue? There is a baptism in 1812 of a William Watson to James and Martha in Romsey which looks promising, and trees say she was Martha Rose, although there is nothing to base this on. Has anyone any ideas of where I can look?
There is also a baptism for a Robert Watson in Romsey parents James and Martha 5/5/1805 born 2nd Feb plus Fanny 1800, Mary 1803, James 1807, and Sarah 1809
oooh I couldn't find a Robert, that's a bit later than I was expecting. Thank you! Off to check. Edit -wait a minute, that's a new Robert. D'oh. But still good
James Watson married Martha Rose 26/2/1796 in Romsey I did not look prior to 1800 for baps. but there is James 1797 and Martha 1798 I only have transcriptions so cannot check the originals for you
There is a baptism of Martha Rose 6/6/1770 at Romsey d/o Nathaniel and Elizabeth and James Watson 12/7/1772 at South Stoneham s/o James (no mother's name given)
Yes I wondered about that. It's a bit strange with no mother. I can't tell if it's him or not, as I have nothing to go on. I hoped there would be a corresponding bap for a Robert which would help give it weight. I have a suspicion they moved in from somewhere else
Not that it helps much but there is a marriage of James Watson to Fanny Vear 5/12/1771 at South Stoneham
