Ann Purchase married John Stickland on 9 Jun 1850 in Piddletrenthide, both were born there c1823

Ann and John had three children Jane (1851 Piddletrenthide), Emily Purchase (1852 Piddletrenthide) and George Richard (1855 Wareham)

Ann died in 1857 and John remarried to Theresa Brown in Wareham 14 Nov 1858, John and Theresa go on to have another four children.

I can trace George Richard through to his death in Portsmouth in 1909. But I cannot find a trace of his two sisters after the 1861 census in Wareham (RG 9/1345/30/13). It's possible Jane died in Wareham in 1876 aged 24, but where was she in 1871?

Can anyone find any clue as to what happened with Jane and Emily?

Emily (now named Emma, which often seems to be interchangeable ) is a servant for a George Procter, retired Innkeeper in Burton Road, Lambeth, if I have got her right. Place of birth is Piddletrenthide - and you don't get many of those to the pound! :D

Jane is along the road at number 5 (Emily was at number 34).

Both have been given the surname spelling of STRICKLAND ;)

Well I thought I might be on the trail of Emily/Emma but I think not ... :headbang:

Emma Stickland married Frank Toms in Jun 1876 Walsall

    1891 census (RG12/2258/66/26)
    Emma born Puddletown
sees them with a mother in law Mary A Strickland

John's second wife Theresa had died in 1880, but I can't find a third marriage for him, and anyway he's widowed in Wareham in 1891, dies later that year

I should have put, the transcription has her surname as Hickland (the original shows it was Stickland), so another possible for a mangling of Stickland:D
Not that it has helped in 1881 looking for Emily *land born Dorset, or even just Emily - nothing zilch, nada:headbang:

Cannot find them in 1881 or beyond. I wonder if they emigrated somewhere...

    I have exciting news ... maybe ...

Jane and Emily had a half-sister Annie Blanche or Blanche; after her mother died in 1880 she entered the workhouse (she was 11), after this I lost her also

But I've just had a hint for a marriage in Australia!!

Interesting to read about Annie Blanche as she has been a family mystery for many years, but I managed to locate her post-workhouse just this week. I have Jane, Emily Purchas and George Richard (My ancestor) from John/Ann, and Edmund, John C, Frank, Annie Blanche, and also Henry (b 1873 Wareham) from John/Theresa. Anyone know anything about Henry as I can find no records other than that he was in the workhouse with Annie Blanche in the 1881 census? There was another Henry Stickland born 1973 but died 1876, so clearly not the same one.

I'm not sure if Henry fits in, or if he is an unrelated Stickland who just happened to be in the workhouse at the same time as Annie Blanche, especially as they aren't listed together (there is one intervening name). The Henry registered in Mar 1873 Wareham has the mother's maiden name of Dorey, presumably this is the one who died in 1876 age 3 (unless its the Henry George registered Sep 1872 in Dorchester -- it isn't he is also alive in 1881 and after). I cannot find a birth registration for another Henry Stickland, or an unnamed male Stickland in Wareham, though there is a Robert Harry Moses Stickland no mmn registered Jun 1874 in Wareham, could it be him? I cannot see any further records for him at all.
Of course he could belong to the family but they failed to register him, it did happen ..

Thanks - that makes a lot of sense. I think back in the early days of researching the tree when I didn't reference anything!) I just made the assumption that he was related to Annie Blanche. It seems they registered all the other children, so why would they not have registered Henry if he was theirs. This thread has been really helpful in finding out more about her and clearing up the mystery of them both. Thank you.
