I did wonder why where he was living in Cardiff was named 'Cerne Abbas' That is a place in Dorset. The 1871 census that @Ma-dotcom found Gabriel, FWJ's father was born in Cerne Abbas, Dorset. Gabriel Francis Masters Jeffery Baptism date: 08 Nov 1834, Cerne-Abbas, Dorset, England Father Gabriel Baker Jeffery Mother: Alice Guppy Gabriel Francis Masters Jeffery married Emma Bullock in 1856 in West Ham, Essex
From the Sherborne Mercury 27th May 1843 May 20, Mr Gabriel Jeffery, Master of the Union House at Epping, Essex, aged 34 years, son of the late Mr W. Jeffery, of Sherborne. He was only taken ill on Tuesday, and died the following Saturday of a bilious fever.
The marriage cert is on Ancestry. Alice Guppy Jeffery was a widow, daughter of Francis Masters, married Edmund Champness, a widower and a 'gentleman' on the 15th October 1850 at St John's Church, Waterloo,
In 1851 Alice and Edmund Champness were Master and Matron of Epping Union Workhouse at Theydon Garnon, Essex. (HO107/1770/20853)
Wendy, Ann and Chimp many thanks for your help and findings! What a surprise! I found F.W.J. Jeffery on the crew list of the Duntrune in 1875 and 1880 in Australia. He made two trips first as an apprentice and in 1880 as mate. No other voyages found yet. Wendy: You found him in 1881, 1887 and 1889 in tickets of mariners right, may i ask what that was? I know that he later was skipper on the barge Mary & Kate for the English and continental shipping company. Still no trace in census of 1901 or 1911, probably on sea at the time. Wondering on what ship/ employment he was between 1895 and 1914
Arwin, they were 2nd Mate -14 Apr 1881 Issue Port: London,Certificate Number: 09847 Issue Date: 26 Mar 1887 -Competency as First Mate. square rigged schooner. London [hope this is right from memory] 21 June 1889 Master: certificate no. 09847. Trying to find in my Firefox history but they have changed their page & it's so hard to find anything. Ancestry took me on a run through multi directories which had nothing to do with Frank W.J. Jeffrey. Not a good start for today with no I'net for some time.
I wonder if this thread is still around? Just found this forum, I'm currently looking for all of the descendants of William Jeffery and Susanna Baker and am concentrating on Gabriel Francis and both his marriages (1 to Emma Bullock and 2 to Eliza Fletcher nee Woodsend). I have most of them (I think) but would like to tie up any details. Also, I may be able to help with some stuff. My own interest in this is my own descent from William and Susanna's son, William, who married Kinburgh Forward Upjohn in 1829 at Melcombe Regis. Keith Jeffery, Brisbane in deepest darkest Queensland.
