John Clayton and his sister Louisa

  • John Clayton was baptised on Christmas Day 1822 in Wilden Bedfordshire.
  • His sister Louisa was baptised on the 16th January 1825 in Wilden.
  • Their parents were William and Elizabeth Clayton.
  • William b 1785 in Wilden was transported to Australia in 1826.
  • Elizabeth b 1784 in Wilden, married a Richard Wootton, (b 1775 in Great Barford, Bedfordshire) in 1833 in Keysoe Bedfordshire.
  • In 1851 Elizabeth and Richard are living with Richard's son Charles in Lambeth, Surrey. Richard is described as a pauper tailor.
The only evidence I have of John and Louisa's existence is a record of baptism. What happened to them?

Thanks Wendy. Thomas Clayton can also be found in 1841 living with his half brother Joseph Hopkins in Bedford. Joseph was Elizabeth's illegitimate son and my husband's ancestor.

I think Vintor E. Wooton on the 1861 census is actually Visitor E. Wooton (E for Elizabeth). Richard may have died pre 1861. I am yet to find a possible death record.

John, Louisa and Thomas's brother William born about 1819. William's death was reported on
Saturday 24 November 1838 , Huntingdon, Bedford & Peterborough Gazette , Cambridgeshire. Cause of death: apoplexy bleeding on the brain. He was living with Joseph Hopkins at the time. Joseph was called as witness.

William Clayton senior served time in Bedford goal for 'bastardy' in 1819!

One of the trees on A. is mine. John and Louisa are proving to be an impenetrable brickwall. Wish I could find Elizabeth and Richard in 1841.
 
I now understand your difficulty Stafford.
Several trees feature Wootton children eg. Charles b. 1826-
father Richard, Mother Elizabeth. this is where confusion enters. So many marriages for Richard Wootton to an Eliz'th.

A likely death for Richard Wootton:
Deaths Dec 1856. WOOTTON Richard Bedford 3b-204.

Possible for Louisa:Louisa was baptised on the 16th January 1825 in Wilden.
First name(s): Louisa.--Last name: CLAYTON
Date of burial 25 Sep 1825.Age at death: 9 Months
Calculated year of birth: 1825
Place of burial Blunham. (just up & across the track from Bedford.)
Dedication: St Edmund or St James
County: Bedfordshire.

Saw a few possible in 1841 but too faded to read on this mach.
Even looked for Louisa & John under Wootton.
Was able to check the 'Victor' again. you're correct, it was 'visitor':)

Wendy, you've done more then enough! Both deaths are highly likely. I'm rather excited about Louisa's in particular. I've been searching for clues between Wilden and Keysoe. Blunham is new. Where did you find the record?

Richard's first wife and Charles's mother was also an Elizabeth. Somewhere in my notes I have her details. I found a marriage between Elizabeth Clayton and Richard Wootton in Keysoe in 1833.
Elizabeth was permitted to remarry 7 years after William Clayton was transported. I've been extremely lucky connecting the Hopkins, Wootton and Clayton families through newspaper articles, parish records and census records.

My husband also remembers being told as a child the Claytons were "some kind of relation". We also suspect one of my husband's great aunts was fathered by William Clayton junior. Her middle name was 'Clayton' and William lived around the corner! Her 'father', whose name appears on her baptism record, had been dead for 7 years!

Unfortunately, I've had no luck tracing Elizabeth Hopkin's parents nor Joseph Hopkin's father. Thanks to the online resources for Bedford goal I found a record for a gentleman of Wilden gaoled for 'bastardy' round about the same time Joseph was born. A tantalising clue yet to be confirmed.

Thanks Wendy,
Leighton Buzzard was the home of many Hopkins. They dispersed after the enclosure of small holdings. However, I feel Elizabeth was descended from the Hopkins who lived in Wilden.
 
Can't edit my post! According to census records Elizabeth was born in Wilden about 1784. Her first child, I am aware of, was born in 1813 in Wilden.
 
Could well be your Louisa buried at Blunham. From Beds FHS Parish Register Transcripts of Blunham, Burials 1571-1851:

25 September 1825 Louisa CLAYTON of Charlton, aged 9 months

No other CLAYTON burials on the Transcripts.

Should have been Thomas Clayton not William Clayton junior!
