I am researching a John TADD an Ag. Labourer. How far we can go depends on the answers to God Knows how many questions can be answered.
What have I got so far?
    1] His marriage in Wiltshire
    2] 1841 census
    3] 1851 census.
    4] Baptisms of children

1] On 28 March 1831 John Tadd married Ann Mizen in Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire. Both made the marks rather than signed.

2] The couple settled in Lower Westwood, Wiltshire and by the time of the 1841 census - H0107/1176/12/5/4 - they had 6 children. John's age [rounded] was 30 and Ann's [rounded] was 25. Both were supposedly born in County.

3] In 1851 census - RG9/1841/60/12 - in Upper Westwood, Wiltshire they now have 9 children at home. Ann's age is now 35 [born Wraxall, Wilts.] and John's age is 46 [born Bath, Somerset].

4] I have the baptisms in Westwood for 6 children - 13 October 1852 - George, William, Joseph, Amelia, Eliza and Thomas. I cannot find baptisms for James, Susannah, John and Mary Ann.

    That's it for starters

Susanna of John and Ann TADD, do do
John of John & Ann TADD, do do

All baptised on 21 April 1835 at Bradford.

3 for the price of 1 on 21 April 1835
6 for the price of 1 on 13 October 1852 in Westwood.

Guess he was saving up between those dates.

Susanna had quite a good time before she died in April and was buried 21 April 1867 in Westwood.

Would love to find her in 1861 census.

I like it Janet. Ancestry has her transcribed as TOD and born in Bradford on Avon

She had a son George born 1863 and registered 4th q. in Westwood. George was baptised in Westwood April 1864. Unlike her 2 ogther nsons born previously and also named George, he survived infancy. I belideve he can be found in 1871 census -RG10/2493/7/8 - an 8 year old lodger with the Marks family in Walcott, Somerset.

I know it claims he was born in Bath, but maybe she was working as a Servant in Bath, had the baby and went back to Bradford on Avon where she registered the birth - Bath is under 10 miles from Bradford on Avon.

Thanks for this Janet. I found James and Susanna on the image of the parish register on Ancestry - items #1431 and 1432 - but item #1433 - 1457 were also done on 21 April 1835 but John's name was not there.

How did you find it as I would like to add a copy of the image to my tree?

    Thanks

This has been a very confusing bunch of folks. To the best of my limited ability I have, I think, found that John and Ann had 12 children. They baptised 9 of those in 2 sessions - 3 in 1835 [see post #2] and the 6 I found [13 October 1852] - and nowhere was there an indication of their dates of birth. In most instances the ages and relationship to head of house was off-base.
    For one census - 1861 -
Ann - the mother - was in gaol
Thomas and Joseph - 2 sons - were in the workhouse.
George, William and Amelia - 2 sons and 1 daughter - were living together in Lower Westwood - RG9/1298/79/5
Susanna [aka Susan] may be the one found - see post #5

Of the others 3 were deceased - William [1838-1841], Amelia [1846-1847] and Eliza [1852-1855] and 3 not found. The 3 not found were:
James baptised in 1835 - may have died in 4th q. 1865 in Gloucester, Gloucestershire. In Dec. 1850 he was sentenced to 6 weeks imprisonment and whipped for a conviction of Larceny. In 1851 census he was a 19 year old Ag. Labourer.
John baptised in 1835 - and found in 1871 with wife Ann and a son John. His wife died in 1875 and John is a widower in 1881. He died 1890.
Mary Ann baptism not found but born 2nd q. 1839 in Bradford on Avon. Not found after 1851 census except for a death - 1st q. 1922 in Bradfrord on Avon age 82.

Help with William - not the one who died!!!
    1] Cannot find his birth.
2] 1851 census - Westwood with Iford, age 6 with parents and siblings - H0107/1841/60/12
3] 1861 census - Lower Westwood, age 18 with brother George age 22, sister Amelia and a nephew William. Both brothers were Ag. Lab's. RG9/1298/79/5.
4] 1871 census - Lower Westwood with Ann [mother a widow], age 16, Joseph age 19 and Thomas age 17 all are Ag. Lab's. Joseph and Thomas are enumerated as her sons and William is a Grandson. RG10/1924/98/14.
5] Wiltshire, England, Church of England Marriages and Banns, 1754-1916 - William Tadd and Mary Spender[?] 6 April 1874 in Westwood. Can Mary be found prior to marriage and who is named as her father?
    6] Not found 1881 census.
7]1891 census - Bradford North Western, William age 45, wife Mary age 48 and daughter Matilda age 24 - RG12/1606/42.
    8] 3rd q 1891 William died - Bradford on Avon vol. 5a, page 70. Estimated age 41.

    And also
Can anything else on his wife be found?

As for their daughter Matilda, I have not found her birth but a baptism for a Maria Matilda Tadd, parents William and Mary on 23 July 1880 and is noted on the register as an Adult Baptism.

Have now found that Matilda's birth was registered as Maria Matilda Spender 3rd q. 1864 so maybe William and Mary lived together before they were married in 1874.

John's baptism is part of the same record as that of Susanna, i.e. 1432. If you look closely, the register shows Susanna of John & Ann TADD, etc. and the same record shows John, underneath Susanna's name, of do, do, do. I guess the incumbent was also economising on space in the parish register!

Could this be Mary Ann in the 1861 census of Bradford on Avon (RG9/1299, folio 84, page 19):

Mary Ann SPENDER Head Un 20 Woollen Cloth Worker Wilts Bradford
Louisa do Daur 1 do do
Daniel do Brother Un 18 Mason's Labourer do do

Mary Ann seems to be a bit of a mystery girl, Colin. I cannot find a birth registration on the GRO Index online for either Mary or brother Daniel - if I have the correct Mary Ann in the 1861 census - although daughter Louisa's birth is registered in the March qtr 1860 at Bradford, no mother's maiden name shown.

It looks as if Mary SPENDER was illegitimate as her marriage record in 1874 to William TADD shows her as a 28 year old spinster, father Reuben PEARCE a Labourer. There is a Ruben PEARCE in the 1851 census of Bradford on Avon (HO107/1841, folio 231, page 4) who is shown as an unmarried 30 year old Haulier living at Poulton Place. By 1861 he is living in Bradford married to a Mary and there is a marriage registration on the GRO Index in the March qtr 1856 at Bath reg district to a Mary MIZEN - isn't that another surname you are interested in, Colin?

Mary SPENDER is living with grandparents George & Ellen SPENDER in the 1851 census of Bradford on Avon (HO107/1841, folio 403, page 28) and I think her mother may be George & Ellen's daughter Keren as brother Daniel is living with his mother Keren SPENDER together with brother Charles in the 1871 census of Bradford.

I think you've nailed her as far as background is concerned - thank you.

Her other daughter - Louisa - was in the workhouse aged 11 in 1871 in Westwood - RG10/1924/103/23 - and also is a 6 year old named Elizh. Spender. I have not found a birth c. 1864-1865 for a Spender daughter except for Maria Matilda - 3rd q. 1864 vol. 5a page 123.

I wonder - since I haven't found Mary Ann in 1871 - could the 2 girls [Louisa and Elizh.] both be illegitimate and that Elizh. is really Maria Matilda?
Then Mary Ann met up with William Tadd after 1871 and they got married 6 April 1874. Louisa would have been aged 14 or so in 1874 and may have been outside of the area by the time of Mary Ann's marriage. I have not found Louisa after 1871.

    What do you think?

I really don't know, Colin. However, a birth registration, according to Ancestry, took place in the June qtr 1863 at Bradford on Avon reg district of an Eliza Tadd SPENDER which has made me a little suspicious as to perhaps an illegitimate birth, but I cannot find this registration on the actual GRO Index although the original record is available to view on Ancestry. There is also a birth registration, again on Ancestry, of a Mary SPENDER in the March qtr 1840 at Bradford on Avon reg district, which I also cannot find on the GRO site although Ancestry do have a copy of the actual record online.

I cannot find Louisa after the 1871 census record, nor can I find Elizabeth and, apart from Mary Matilda's birth registration, I can find no trace of her until the 1891 census of Westwood when she is living with parents William & Mary TADD as a TADD at 14 Budhay Place. Mary Matilda TADD married George Francis HOBBS on 6 October 1909 at Bradford on Avon (image available to view on Ancestry in case you do not already have it). Her address is shown as 14 Market Street, Bradford. George Francis HOBBS is shown in the 1911-15 Wiltshire Electoral Registers living at 14 Market Street. Death registration in September qtr 1959 at Trowbridge reg district for a George F HOBBS, aged 83. Earlier death registration for a Maria M HOBBS in March qtr 1936 at Bradford on Avon reg district, aged 70.

1901 census of Bradford on Avon (RG13/1936, folio 22, page 13) shows widowed Mary TADD, aged 60, a Charwoman, living at 19 Barton Orchard. Her death registration is not until the March qtr 1922 at Bradford on Avon, but so far I haven't found her in the 1911 census record. Ah, found her on FMP in the 1911 census living with married daughter Maria Matilda HOBBS at 14 Market Street, Bradford on Avon. No George Francis living there but according to their marriage record he was in the Royal Marines, so perhaps was on duty when the census record was taken.

I don't know if this is relevant or not, but there is a Louisa SPENDER who appears in the 1913-15 Electoral Register of Bradford on Avon living at 51 Church Street. Don't think this is your Louisa though, as the 1911 census shows her living at 51 Church Street, aged 33, born Castle Street, Trowbridge, and she is living with a sister Kate.

Tea beckons, so will have to stop now.

While we may have found her in 1861 - see post #5 - Susannna [sometimes as Susan] had a predilection for naming children GEORGE. If this is one and the same person flitting between St. Catherine/Bath/Westwood, she was certainly a very 'welcoming' sight - as the following events will presume:
    Baptisms
    William George Tadd - 2 Oct. 1853 - Westwood - Susanna - born 18 Jul. 1853
    George Tadd - 24 Feb. 1857 - Westwood - Susan - no birth date - private
    George Tadd - 28 Sep. 1858 - Westwood - Susan -- do
    George Tadd - 2 Oct. 1859 - Westwood - Susan -- do
    Elizabeth Tadd - 4 Aug. 1861 - Westwood - Susan -- do
    George Tadd - Apr. 1864 - Westwood - Susan -- do
source - All Wiltshire, England, Church of England Births and Baptisms 1813-1916.

Susanna/Susan was baptised 21 Apr. 1835. She is with her parents in 1841 - Lower Westwood, with parents in 1851 in Upper Westwood and left home and working likely as a domestic servant or ag. labourer shortly thereafter. Her 1st child - [William George] was registered as William James. He had an unfortunate early life and was working as an ag. labourer prior to 1871. He married Sarah Ann Nash 28 Sep. 1876 and had 3 children by 1881 when the family was living in Morgans Hill, Wilts. and he was employed as a Stone Quarryman.
By 1885 the family had moved to Cardiff, Glamorgan 4 more children were born but of his family of 7, 1 had died by the time of the 1891 census when the family was living/sharing a dwelling @ #7 Ruby St., Roarth, Glamorgan and he was unemployed. Things didn't get much better and 2 more children died in the 4th q. 1891 and he died 1st g. 1898.
On 23 Jan. 1908 she remarried to a 50 year old bachelor and she died 2nd q. 1919.

    Of her other children:
a] Elizabeth - her birth registration has not been found but there is the baptism record. There was a birth in Bath of an Eliza Ann Tadd in 1861 that is not my girl. There is a possible death in Bradford on Avon, Wilts. 4th q. 1861 vol.5a, page 63 but no age is given and there is nothing about a burial in Wiltshire, England, Church of England Deaths and Burials 1813-1916. Could this be her?

Now for the sons named George:
    b 1] Born 4th q. 1856. Private baptism in Westwood 24 Feb. 1857. Buried in Westwood age 18months 15 Mar. 1858.
    b 2] Born 3rd q. 1858. Baptised in Westwood 26 Sep. 1858. Buried in Westwood age 8months 14 Oct. 1858.
b 3] Birth reg. not found. Baptised in Westwood 2 Oct. 1859. Buried in Westwood age 4months 30 Oct 1859.
b 4] Born 4th q. 1863. Baptised in Westwood Apr. 1864. Was a lodger age 8 with the Marks family in Walcot, Somerset [birth place Bath, Somerset] in 1871 census - RG10/2493/7/8. Was a servant age 17 with the Babington family in Lower Westwood, Wiltshire [birth place Westwood] - RG11/2050/81/6. Not found after 1881.

    Now off to have lunch.

This looks possible to me as well. The age is a little 'off' in 1851 but matches in 1861.

As for the relationship of 'Keren' I think she may be daughter in law and is the wife and mother of Mary born 1st q. 1840 vol. 8 page 287 in Bradford on Avon.

This ties into the Mary Spender in the 1841 census - H0107/1166/8/8/22 - with parents, grandparents and siblings.

"Keren' is a widow in the 1871 census. It looks like her husband died in Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire on 22 Dec. 1870.

    Add to the above:
    5] Possible baptisms
    6] Convictions and possible sentence
    7] A possible death

Now back to the patriarch of this family - John Tadd born and baptised any time between about 1800 and 1811.
1] The marriage t Ann Mizen was in the Parish of Bradford, Wilts. on 28 Mar. 1831. No age of either is noted , both made their marks and the witnesses were Joseph Fishlock [mark] and William Gibbs [signed].
No names of father of either bride or groom was provided.

2] 1841 census indicates he was born in County. Age was rounded as 30 [indicating 1811] and place of residence was Lower Westwood. Enumerated as TODD with wife and 6 children. Occupation Ag. Lab.

3] 1851 census indicates he was born in Bath Somerset. Age was 46 and place of residence was Upper Westwood. Enumerated as TADD with wife and 9 children [all children born in Wilts.].In total he fathered 13 children - 4 dying between 1841 and 1855. Occupation Ag. Lab.

4] All children were baptised in the area between 1831 and 1852.

    5] Possible baptisms of John:
a] 28 Sep. 1801 - parents Robert and Frances - residence Winsley. Winsley is approx. 2miles from Bradford on Avon.
b] Trees on Ancestry indicate born 1805 in Bath, Somerset. None indicate the name of the parents.

    6] Possible conviction and sentence:
a] In the Summer of 1824 in Somerset, a John Tadd was convicted of Larceny and sentenced to Transportation for 7 years - source England and Wales, Criminal Registers 1791-1892.
b] 12 Jun. 1824 a John Tadd age 22 and born Bath, was admitted to the Ilchester Gaol, Ilchester, Somerset. The register indicates he was age 22, single, labourer, 5ft. 3in., 125lbs., fresh comp. gray eyes, pock marks and scar over rt. eye. His last place of residence was Midway Farm nr. Winfield. There is a written comment in the remarks column that I cannot read - source Somerset, England, Gaol Registers, 1807-1879. The image is of page 10 of the Ilchester Gaol Description Book 1824-1827.

The trees on Ancestry indicate that he was held in a Prison Hulk and later released as these ships were requisitioned for war. Was his sentence commuted in some form and he was later released prior to making his way to Bradford on Avon?

7] There is a death of a John Tadd in 3rd q. 1852 in Bradford on Avon - vol. 5a, page 79. This looks promising as his last child - Eliza - was born in Bath 3rd q. 1852 vol. 5c, page 676. According to Google a walk from Bath to Bradford on Avon via Winsley Road is about 6 miles.
What has me confused as to whether this is my John Tadd is the image of the parish register of Burials for Westwood 1813-1916. This states that John Tadd was buried 2 Aug. 1852 and was aged 60 years and was a resident of Upper Westwood which matches his residence in the 1851 census.
Apart from the age in the parish register I was almost convinced he was my chap.
The trees on Ancestry indicate that he died 29 Jul. 1852.
