I am trying to trace Joseph Wolton born abt 1796. He married Mary Marshall probably about 1818 plus, as their first born was Mary Ann Wolton 14/4/1820.

I've traced Joseph and his family on the 1841 census as Walton, (HO 107/730/9) living in Gerrard Street,Soho, London (then Middx) with Mary and 8 children.

They show that Joseph & Mary were both born outside of the County of Middx.

I cannot find anything about Joseph or Mary as I don't have their place of birth nor either can I find them on any census after 1841. I've tried tracking in the 1851 using the names of their two youngest children who would then have been Emily 14 yrs and Julia 11/12 yrs, but no luck either.

I would like to hear from anyone who can assist me with information on Joseph before his marriage and him and Mary after 1841.

I also know that in 1842 Mary Ann Wolton (daughter) married (age 21) one of my ancestors William Conner

    Thank you

Please can you say how you know Mary's birth name was Marshall; is it from Julia's birth cert?

Looking again at Joseph's birth place it could be Bridgnorth or Bridgworth, but it is Shropshire.

I think the 1861 census shows his age as 69 and I think his place of birth is Bridgnorth and the 1851 census as aged 59 and place of birth as Bridgnorth. This gives an approximate date of birth as 1792 for Joseph and 1795 and place of birth as York for Mary.

As Moo says in post 4, are you sure of Mary's maiden name, as there is a marriage on Ancestry at Paddington St James of a Joseph WALTON & Mary GLOVER dated 23 January 1819 and a baptism at St Dennis, York on 3 April 1795 of a Mary Ann GLOVER daughter of Jonathan & Mary MARTIN which would fit in quite well with the census details for your Mary's birth.

From Ancestry's Select Births and Christenings, you would appear to have two choices for the baptism of Joseph WALTON (one of them seems to have stayed in Bridgnorth according to the census records):

29 November 1791 at St Leonard's Joseph son of John & Fanny WALTON
    or
13 April 1792 at St Leonard's Joseph son of Thomas & Mary WALTON

As Chimp says, Vicky, we have all been there, done that and got the t-shirt! I have subscriptions to both Ancestry and FMP as they dovetail together pretty well. Some records I find on Ancestry, some on FMP and some not at all! But then that gives me a reason to go off on short breaks visiting various Archives, villages, churches and churchyards and in the process meeting some wonderfully helpful people.

Has anyone figured out who Joseph Walton's parents were? Witnesses at Joseph and Mary's marriage in 1819 were
William Walton and Elizabeth Glover, if that helps.
For Mary Ann Glover there seems to be a number of choices for her parents,
IGI has a Mary Ann Glover b York 8 feb 1795 and c York 3 apr 1795 parents John Glover and Hannah Martin.
IGI has a Mary Ann Glover c st denis York 3 apr 1795 parents John Glover and Mary Martin.

John Glover m Hannah Martin in All Saints Wakefield 7 aug 1792 (IGI and Ancestry has this).

IGI has a Mary Ann Glover c st denys York 3 apr 1795 parents James Glover and Sarah Peters.

    These various combinations of parents,
    Wm Glover and Mary Martin
    John Glover and Hannah
    James Glover and Sarah Peters
    Jno Glover and Hannah Martin
have other children in the 1793-1801 period.

The Lebina Walton who shows up in the 1851 census is Selina Walton I think.
