Here I am again and thank you for your help yesterday. This time I have Joshua Middleton who appears on 1841 and 1851 census as the son of Robert and Martha Middleton born c1833 and at the time living in Saxlingham, Norfolk. 1841 he is 8 years old and 1851 he is 18 and an ag lab.
Family tree says he arrived in Australia in 1867 and by 1869 was on the gold digs at Cargo. Everything is fine after he arrived. I have all that but I can’t find when he arrived.
This is what appears in an old publication ‘Australian Men of Mark’....
“Joshua Middleton was born in Norfolk in 1838. After the completion of his education he worked at farming. When he came out to New South Wales he was engaged for sometime as a seaman and coasted between Sydney and Melbourne..........”
Other family lore says he was sent out here by his family for stealing apples from a tree, and captained a steam ship in Australia.....
A big ask but I would just like to find him, somewhere between 1851 and 1867. Thanks.

If I could add, Joshua was baptised as Jehosaphat Middleton. Born25 July 1832 Saxlingham and baptised 4 August 1832. Just found it. :)

There is a UK Merchant Navy Seaman Record for a Joshua Middleton born Norfolk 1834 Year Range 1853-1857.
This could account for the merchant navy occupation in Australia????? or not???
His burial record has him dying in 1890 age 50 which doesn't help.

I wonder if this could be Joshua - Holt is only about 4 miles from Saxlingham.
    Norfolk Chronicle 8th January 1853
Thursday week, at Holt church, by the Rev. Jex Blake, Joshua Middleton, shepherd to A. Boyd, Esq., to Anne Riseborough, many years a faithful servant of the late Mrs. Boyd, of Holt-lodge.

On the 15th July 1854 in the Norwich Mercury, there appeared an advert for the sale of the Holt Estate. Included in all the details under the heading of Farm Buildings it says
Three well-built Cottages or Tenements, now the respective occupations of Robert Page, John Grey, and Joshua Middleton.....

so, if this is your Joshua, I wonder if he had to get out when the estate was sold and so decided to head for Australia?

The entry is confusing - 2 ages and the name Joseph written above with an
    'x' next to it.
The next entry might be a clue - it is for a Dennis Middleton of Norfolk
Joshua had a brother Denis [sic] in 1851
    upload_2018-12-10_8-59-49.png

    Columns read - age, out/home 1853 1854 1855 1856

    Sorry, that’s post #6 not #8

Ann. You’ve done it again. That certainly looks like Joshua and his brother Denis. The age difference fits. I wonder if Denis came here as well.
I also wonder if they the names of the ships.....City of W???? for Joshua and Augusta for Dennis.

Well Denis went somewhere because he married in 1856 father Robert but doesn’t show up again after that. Now to Trove to see if he is here.
A Dennis Middleton died in Sunderland in 1857. Sunderland is written in the last column against his name....
And what or where is L Elgin and what would the arrows mean? Please.

There was a ship named ‘Augusta’ around that time. So I’m assuming that for Denis he was on the Augusta from Sunderland and for Joshua it was the ‘City of W? from Liverpool. Would some good eyes be able to figure out the name of Joshua’s ship please?
I wonder if its City of Washington :reading:

The City of Washington....built at Glasgow by Tod and McGregor
There is a small book titled 'The Descendants of Robert and Martha Middleton'. In the first paragraph "a legend among some of the descendants has it that Joshua fought in the Crimean War" as well as further on it is said he was sent out by the family for stealing apples. But, the ship 'City of Washington' was launched (Liverpool and Philadelphia owned) on August 1st 1855. It was then chartered by the French Government and used as a transport for 18 months during the Crimean War.
So. What do you think? Does this look to be my Joshua?
Were the descendants correct about him in the Crimean War?

    What do you know.:D
In 1860 the Lady Elgin and the Augusta collided. I’ll get back to that in the morning. So they both were on the Lady Elgin at come stage.

I’ve been thinking about this and the ages and names Joshua and Joseph. The age 20 seems to be written at the same time as the list and the 23 entered a bit later as it is darker and in a different hand. Maybe the original that the list was taken from was too hard to decipher. Also he may have been also known as Joseph as he was baptised Jehosaphat. There is also another Joseph Middleton born 1834 Norfolk on the Merchant Navy Records, same time period.

In post #8 could someone please tell me what the last column heading is.
Column 5 against Joshua is mentioned Ld Elgin which I believe to be the Lady Elgin. There was a ship Lord Elgin but it didn’t come along until much later.
The Lady Elgin arrived in Australia in August 1854 with 300 immigrants, mostly Irish. There is also a crew list on Mariners and Ships in Australian Waters but the copy is terrible and many of the names are indicipherable. One name ends with ‘ton’ which may or may it be Joshua. Also the passenger list of the Lady Elgin blocks out where the ship sailed from and the date. I would like to know if she sailed from Ireland, preferably Cork. Thanks
Also, another small request. In the columns next to Joshua’s name there something very feint diagonal writing. Any one have good eyes to figure that one out? It seems as if it may be the name of another ship. Thanks again.

As for what says  Opartia, Opanta perhaps?
I think it could be a ship's name, other entries also have words written diagonally across and they look like ship names.

Yes, that’s what I meant. I also think it is a ship too. Now to find one with a similar looking name. Thank you.
