Mixed up? You are right there. I have worked out the Callaghans. Daniel and Andrew are brothers. It’s their father Daniel who is the master mariner. the car right now so will fill you in later.
Elizabeth Ann Callaghan is the daughter of Andrew Daniel Callaghan the bigamist and Estelle was His granddaughter.
I know we are getting away from Kate Burrows but we may be able to work back to her. Daniel Callaghan was born 1878 Lismore, father Daniel mother Elizabeth Ann Elizabeth Catherine 1874 born Richmond River father Daniel mother Elizabeth Ann (this I believe to be Estelle who married Charles Coleman.) Andrew 1883 born Lismore father Daniel mother Elizabeth Ann died 1889 Josephine 1897 born Maclean 1897 father Daniel mother Elizabeth Ann The Elizabeth Ann who married Daniel in 1878 was I believe Elizabeth Ann Skinner as on the marriage certificate of Estelle Elizabeth Ann Callaghan to Charles Coleman, although the image is blurred, looks like Skinner. Daniel is noted as a Captain and the Skinners were ship owners on the Richmond. There is another Andrew in Ballina, father James who married Rachel Cooper and had about a dozen kids all in Ballina. The marriage cert is on Find a Grave Waverley for Estelle Coleman.
William Alfred Foreman b 7 Feb 1863 Croydon (Kates Uncle) came to Australia after the 1911 census and before 1913, as his wife Ann Fletcher and three of their kids George 15, Grace Helen 13 and Amy 10 arrived on the Roscommon to Brisbane in 1913. George died 1918 in QLD and his mother died 4 May 1926 Brisbane. Grace Helen died 2 June 1960 Newcastle NSW and Amy died 31 Jan 1995 Brisbane she married Charles McCreath. Out of their other three children that they left in the UK two of them died in France during the war, William died 8 Aug 1915 and Alfred died 28 July 1917. That only left Alice b 1889 and I am not sure what happed to her. According to a tree on ANC their father William Alfred went back to the UK and died there in Dec 1946. Now to look into the family that went to Tassie.
There is a fair amount of info on the Whybrows on Tasmania Names Index. Arthur died age 44 in 1895. There is a will on there as well.
I checked the Whybrow family in Tassie and a lot of them moved to Vic as well. But it doesn’t help to find out when Kate came to Australia. I thought that maybe her and her mother may have come out together, but I now believe that Ann Foreman died before the 1881 census as George has a new wife by then. So Kate had a lot of family here but spread out from QLD to Tassie. I would love to find out where she is hiding in the 1881.
She is making it difficult. We are in Sydney for a few days but all I could find for her is here. Still wonder though if she really is Mercias mother with Daniel as on the death reg for Mercia Liela Rance.
I thought I would revisit for you so I went to the 1891 census and found a Kate Burrows age 19 born 1872 London working as a servant for Walter Jervis secretary for the YMCA in Ecclesall Bierlow, Yorkshire and his wife also Kate born London. If this is her then that gives you a window of 2 years for her arrival in Australia. We found a message for her in the papers in 1893 so she was here then. Possible?
It is a sad that we can’t find Kate and Ann on the 1881 census. I don’t believe that I have found when Mary Ann arrived here either. I will have a look at the 1891 census but it seems a long way from where they lived.
Not by our standards. Just up the road. I did notice that the lady of the house, Kate, was also from London. Perhaps she moved with them when they took up the YMCA position.
Yep in Australia everyplace is just up the road. My doctors are a two hour dive away and at the moment I am doing this once a week to Wollongong. But if I go to the doctor in Nowra that is just up the road and takes one hour to get there. We don’t think twice about going up there for anything. .
If had noticed this thread earlier I could have mentioned that more than 50% of the Burrows/Burroughs in my tree are rendered as Burris/Burriss. Different accents.
