I'd be grateful just to know why connections in my Family ended up in Glamorgan & stayed to their end. Was it a particularly beautiful spot or helpful health wise?
Hi Wendy, Im sure you know that Glamorgan is a relatively large area (to use in South Wales that is) When investigating family.. Do you have a specific area where your family settled.. Glamorgan had/has a huge wealth of diverse usage agriculture, industry etc and today leisure and health. Please follow up and if I can help I will. Talk soon. Well, there you are. Thank you Robert, I have followed one chappie through two marriages, Neath, & his passing, Bridgend, now during a marathon quest to sort out children of a 2nd Cousin x 1 removed I find myself making a separate Family file in Legacy to try to sort out people of similar names & birth dates. Several removed to Glamorgan, one to Ogmore? another in Bridgend,( I wonder if they knew each other?) & I cannot post on the names as there are several online trees half finished & I don't want to tread on toes of those with closer ties. Some don't seem to be what I have found with church records. Very cryptic puzzle at the moment. Thank you for those links, they may prove very useful. I've only been two days on this yet so still far to go. Can't think what possessed me, I'm supposed to be sorting certificates & census images for the greater good of the file I've got going. Oh yes, what possessed me was finding the marriage of perhaps a close relative to ...you guessed it..a close relative.
I believe I've found the answer to my query in that the Lass I was looking at married her 1st Cousin x 2 removed. Her Father home from the war in 1917 went to Glamorgan & his death from wounds was reg'd in 1918 at Bridgend. Was there a Military hospital or R&R Hospital there? A word to be wary: My computer refused to let me into various sites due to virus threats: Grave Matters Name extracts from various sources Family History Society . & for the mailing list my watchdog said it was clearing virus threats. maybe just mine, but it seems to do a jolly good job.
If you have the time & records are available I would like to know what became of Dorothy Mary Lawrence formerly Vines nee Ruck. She married Charles John Lawrence at the Bridgend Reg. Office 22 Feb 1921 at age 26 [born 7 June 1893 Lincoln District, Lincolnshire]. They had 3 sons, Harry James Charles Lawrence b, 1921 at 20 West Road Bridgend - died 1979 Hitchin Dist. Hertfordshire ; William Wilfred Lawrence b. 1 Dec 1922, 74 Newcastle Hill, Bridgend - died 1984 Bristol; Cecil John Lawrence b and died 1927 in Bridgend District. All 3 sons baptized at St. Illtudes Church Newcastle Hill, Bridgend. In 1929, Charles John had moved to Dorset & 'taken up with' a married woman with 7 children. The story is that her husband had deserted her, so she had 3 more children with Charles John Lawrence while waiting 7 years to declare her EX as dead so she was free to marry. The children were born 1929, 1931 & 1933. They married in 1941 at the Registry Office in Poole, Dorset. But, what happened to the wife left back in Wales between 1927 & 1929? I can't find her marrying, dying or immigrating. Do not know if they divorced or the husband just left. Are divorce records available for this time period? Any ideas on how we can find out what happened? Thanks Elaine
Hi Robert, Don't know what resources you have but I would be very grateful if you can solve a riddle for me if my Gt Grandparents actually married TWICE (to each other). I wonder if at the first marriage when he married Ann Hughes under his taken surname of DAY he had not had the surname changed officially and in time he became concerned the marriage was not official. If he later changed his name "officially" this would account for the second marriage making things legal. Info on first marriage 2 Nov 1867 Cardiff Reg Office Info on 2nd marriage NEWPORT MON. 1903 Dec 11a 457 without seeing the actual certificates to see details I can not find out if this is the case (I live most of the time in Greece). Many thanks Robert for the information, I did not know if you had access to copy certificates....your right I'll just have to get them both...... regards Haydn
That looks a good start to me. Thank you very much. I will order the cert to see if Dorothy was ever Ruck & had a father Albert James Ruck. Odd that her 'maiden name' was consistently Lawrence on the Workman births. Seems it should have been Ruck. Thanks again - it gives me a line to pursue. Elaine

Thanks all. Yes, I have her birth & baptism & Dorothy Mary's marriage to both Colin Sydney Vines & Charles John Lawrence, also 1901 & 1911 census entries. The mystery is - what happened to her after her 2nd husband left her & eventually married someone else. I have ordered the cert. Dispatch date 8 Nov, then transit time to USA. We shall see . . . If it is correct, Leslie Bryant Workman died 1963 & left a will [probate index on ancestry] & Dorothy may have died 1987, however that entry shows her born 1904 instead of 1893. Not a deal breaker, I have other women who get younger each time they marry [LOL] - so I'm still optimistic. Elaine
Marriage Cert. has arrived & it isn't the correct person. The bride on the above GRO ref. was as follows: Dorothy May Laurence - Age 25 -Spinster-Abode: 50 James Rd - Father: James Laurence [deceased] Occ: Insurance Agent. Nothing to suggest she was Dorothy Mary Ruck, formerly Vines and born in 1893. Back to the drawing board! Thanks for trying. Elaine
