Gt Grandad Robert Moss married Mary Ann Hargreaves 2.9.1876 St Bartholomews CofE Salford.
    Children: Mary b.1871,John b.Salford 1878-1949(my grandad),Esther 1883-87.

Mary Ann was b. June qtr 1855 Stretford & parents were John Hargreaves(late) & Jane.
    I think they came from Ainsworth.Mary A died 1903.

On the 1881c RG11/3970/64/4 it states that Robert Moss is 27,Mary A is 23 & daughter Mary is 10.That would mean she was born when her mother was only 13.

Could this be correct as I also have Mary(daughter) as being born 1871.
If this is so then when her parents married in 1876 she would be 5 & was she Roberts daughter.

    Any help appreciated.

1851c I have them living 61 Owen Street Chorlton Rd Hulme 4F238
    1841c 93 Welcomb St 4G336

Are you sure it doesn't mean 10 months.
When they married in Salford Robert was a bachelor age 22 and Mary Ann was age 19.

May be she's Robert's daughter, but not Mary's daughter.

Found this on another forum. I can't find it. Sorry
    1891 census RG12; Piece 3227; Folio 131; Page 41.
Salford Lancashire. 3 East Taylor Street
    James and Mary Moss grandparents
    Harry 16
    James 25
John 13 pinmaker (the John mentioned in post #1)
    Mary head 5?
    Mary 18
    Mary 10 granddaughter
    Richard 34.
John and Mary were living with their grandparents James and Mary Moss.
If someone could have a look please it may shed a bit more light.
Also says that Robert probably died c1884. Which is why I cant find him and that Mary may have died before 1903 which is why John and Mary are with the grandies. Esther died in 1887.
    Thank you.

Looking at the GRO index, the mother's maiden name for this Mary Elizabeth Moss was Bradley.

So that rules that one out then.

Robert Moss was the eldest child of James Moss & Mary Bentham who originated in Preston & appeared to have moved to Hyde,Cheshire by the time of the 1871c
James Moss died March qtr 1884 BMD8D114
From then on my Grandad John lived with his siblings & Grandmother in Salford
& he married 1900 to Emma Evans.

Note: In my notes I have a Mary Hargreaves b1853 living at 1 Tomlinson Place RG9/2923 f13/p19.
I don't know if this is the correct family so it has stayed in my notes.
    John Hargreaves 1812 (H) Tottington
    Alice " 1832 (D) Darcy Lever
    Sarah " 1848 (D) " "
    Charles " 1851 (S) Salford
    Jno " 1852 (S) "
    Mary " 1853 (D) "
    James Henry " 1857 (S) "

This info was sent to me quite a while back & I do not have very much info on Mary Ann Hargreaves family at all,& that is why this is still in my notes.

As I said previously Robert died 1884 Salford so the one in the parish of Emmanuel 1891c would be incorrect.
Most of my Moss family lived in the Fishwick area of Preston near to the Parish of St John & I visited the LRO there to get most of my Moss family info.
I also visited St John's Parish Church & felt very privileged to stand in the spot where my 2xGtGrandparents James & Mary married.5 of their children were also baptised there inc.Robert.

That's Ok Sue.Just thought it best to give you the info I know about my Moss family as looking further back it looks as though they were Preston people for years & years.I think my lot were the first to leave the area from what I can see.
My granddad John Moss (Robert & Mary's son) always used to say " Preston proud & true" even though he wasn't born there.Did serve in the Lancashire Fusiliers though who he believed were Prestons own!
