Looking for the registration of William Robert Watterson born about 1863 Isle of Man. Father and mother on death registration are James and Ann. He emigrated to Queensland in 1885 on the Duke of Sutherland and stated he was 22. Thanks.

Sorry to just break into this search after a year or more. But I am confused are you looking for a William Robert Watterson who came from the Isle of Man with his brother James? I am currently searching the same family as my husbands great grandfather was James Watterson born 1836 (Isle of Man) and he resided till his death in 1915, in Charters Towers Qld. Their father was James and mother was Ann Quilliam.

Just trying to wrack my brain as to why I was after him but I believe it is the one who married (post #3) in Orange NSW and lived for a time at Millthorpe. It was to do with information for a local history book. Still working on my brain....sorry.

OK. Found the one I was after. He was William Watterson who died at Forrest Reefs (Millthorpe NSW) in 1930. His obituary says he was 73 years of age and born at Peel, Isle of Man. He was 23 years of age when he came to Australia and the last 47 years at Forrest Reefs. His parents (not mentioned in the obit) were James and Ann, as on his death registration. He married Eliza Jane Wills.
So there is a gap of a couple of years when he could have been in Charters Towers. Nothing I can substantiate gives me any proof that his brother WAS killed in Charters Towers but I found that story somewhere.

So James WATERSON Married Ann Quilliam at Kirk German 17/12/1835
James WATERSON was baptised to James Waterson and Ann Quilliam Kirk German 13/11/1836
William Robert WATTERSON was baptised to James Watterson and Anne Quilliam 27/2/1857 Kirk German.
It looks like Wiilliam Robert and your James are brothers going by the paper chase of William. So James wasn’t killed in Charters Towers at all. Perhaps they lost touch after William came for the gold at Forrest Reefs.
Williams wife Eliza was born in Parkes NSW.

This was found on Isle of Man Family History isle-of-man.com
A Prospecting Watterson: written by Williams son in 1979 when he was 73
‘My father was a Manxman born in the town of Peel. His father in those days owned and controlled a fleet of trading sailing ships. My father was the youngest child in the family. He studied to become a school teacher, also a Church of England minister. He also learned the very useful trade known as a sailmaker. At the age of 21 he sailed for Australia as a member of a team of athletes from England. He held records for running prior to landing in Australia. Whilst on the boat coming out he injured his ankle, thus putting an end to his sporting career. He was under the impression that gold could be found in the streets of Sydney but soon found it was not so. Immediatley afterwards he and his mate made their way to Bathurst where they were informed gold could be had for the digging. They found very little gold there and so packed their swags and headed for Charters Towers. But once again their labour’s were in vain. They then made their way to Millthorpe NSW where they and two other men tried their luck. Again in vain but he met Eliza Jane Mills in Forest Reefs (Millthorpe). They followed the gold to Trunkey, Tuena, Browns Creek Callemont and Cadia. His main position at some of those places was engine driver. Whilst working at Cadia he studied geology specialising in gold quartz. Afterwards he changed his interests to farming and bought a small property at Forest Reefs.’
He makes no mention of a brother James though which is strange. Perhaps they had a strained relationship.

I have uncovered that William and his brother James did have a falling out. As the story goes, he came to Charters Towers one year for a vist and never recieved a very good reception. We are not sure if this was from his brother himself or from James wife, Catherine Jane Kaighin.
The incident with the aborigines was that William was cutting across country on his journey to Charters Towers when they apparently chased him.
Loved the bit of history from Williams son.
