Researching my family tree and am looking for some help from all you wonderfully, experienced folks. On June 5, 1906, Louisa Barnes gave birth to my grandfather Albert Byatt Barnes. Albert was illegitimate and so there isn't a father listed on the birth certificate. Louisa Barnes is listed as a 'Domestic Servant of Alton' and lived at the address 41 Bank Street, Cheadle R.D. It is believed that she worked there until abt 1921. Albert worked at Alton as a boy bringing wood for the fireplaces. My grandfather sailed for Canada abt 1924 or so and never returned or saw his mum again. Over the years he never said much...other than being the child of a servant he wasn't treated very well at Alton particularly by the woman of the house whom he called 'Ellie". He indicated that one time his mother insinuated the father was omitted on the birth certificate because it would have caused 'a horrible scandal'.....he loved and respected his mom and he didn't ever press her for details. I've had no luck locating a Louisa Barnes...any ideas on where I should start? Thanks in advance for your help. Regards...

It seems that Albert in 1911 census was living with William Sister his wife Sarah Sister and their son Charles Henry Sister 24 as a nurse child (being looked after for payment) at Alton, Staffordshire.
Louise may be found as a domestic in 1911 with Arthur Shore, his wife Ada Shore at Stoke upon Trent.
Also do you know where the second name of Byatt came from?
Hmmm. Lots of Byatts in Staffordshire and a few in Alton too.

Well Albert was a 'nurse child' on the 1911 census, living in the Lister Household, at Alton, Staffordshire.

William Lister, Head, Married, 60, General Labourer
    Sarah Lister, Wife, Married, 58
Charles Henry Lister, Son, 24, Copper Roller
Albert Byatt Barnes, Nurse Child, 4, 1907

A 'nurse child' can mean a number of things, from informally adopted or fostered, to temporarily 'farmed out' to close kin, or family friends or near neighbours or private individuals who offered a service.

    Now in 1901 census RG13, Piece 2628, Folio 35, Page 14

    The same household Alton, Staffordshire

William Lister, Head, Married, 50, Gardener Not Domestic
Sarah Lister, Wife, Married, 47, Mayfield, Staffordshire, England
George Lister, Son, Single, 27, Coachman Domestic
John W Lister, Son, Single, 19, Life Insurance Agent
Charles H, Lister, Son, Single, 14, Copper Worker
Louie Barnes, Adopted Daughter, 11, Cheadle, Staffordshire, England

So it looks like Louisa was also adopted.

    There is this birth

    LOUISA BARNES
    Birth year 1891
    Birth quarter 1
Mother's maiden name Barnes (same surname as Louisa, this should be maiden name - Does this indicate illegitimacy ? )

FMP has 'Sister' too, only after looking at the 1911 census did I realise it was Lister.

If naming the father was going to cause a scandal then you can guess where I’m looking.....:nailbiting:

    1911 census

15 Greenhill Lane Cheadle, Staffordshire, England

Samuel Hawley, Head, Married, 35, Furnace Man, Cheadle Staff
Louisa Hawley, Wife, Married, 34, 1877, Cheadle Staff
Nellie Hawley, Daughter, 3, 1908, Cheadle Staff
Hannah Barnes, Sister In Law, Single, 41, 1870, Cotton Winder Smallware, Cheadle Staff

Samuel Hawley married Louisa Barnes in 1906 in the Stoke on Trent R.D.

Could Hannah be the mother of Louisa born 1891 and she named her daughter after her sister?

I think Hannah's parents were Edward Barnes and Mary Ann Waugh, who were married in Cheadle in 1864 6b 369

Barnes children with the mothers maiden name Waugh born in Cheadle

    John - 1867
    William - 1869
    Hannah - 1871
    Samuel - 1873
    Mary Ellen - 1875
    Louisa - 1877

If this is the correct family, Edward Barnes worked at Parkhall Colliery, Cheadle and lost his life in an explosion on 20th February 1877 :(

According to the funeral notice Edward, besides being a miner, was also a preacher and Sunday school teacher.

Beat me to it Terry, I was off on another tangent before I got around to posting the above.....

It's a shame they didn't mention any other members of his family. I saw mention of a brother, Thomas, but nothing else.

I truly can't read this enough....thank you again for all your efforts. I'll take this and add it to my family tree and go from there.....is there anything more addicting, time consuming or good fun that starting a family tree? I can't get enough....I've hit a road block on the other side of my family...'Stevens'....I just need a few details confirmed on one or two people and I've got a 'whole whack of them".....perhaps I'll drop you the details in a bit....thanks again....bless you all...
