I am trying to find out some family history for my husbands side of the family. His Mother Louise dies I think in 1988. She had two children. I know very little about her family and am hoping you can give me some help. She married her husband Fred Akroyd in the parish of Aston Birmingham but they later divorced. I am told that her family originally came from Shrewbury but I cant confirm this. Any ideas x

Hello Jules - if you have a copy of this marriage certificate, it should give the ages of the happy couple - plus the names and occupations of their respective fathers. This in turn will help to identify the family.

If you do not have a copy, one may be ordered from the GRO for £9.25 using the following reference:
Fred Akroyd and Louise E Hill, Birmingham registration district, March quarter 1950, volume 9c, page 86

However, please be mindful that details of living - or potentially living - people are not allowed on the forum. :)

    Thanks,

According to FreeBMD, Fred Akroyd married Louise E Hill in the March quarter 1950, GRO reference Birmingham 9e 86

Well done Jan. You nipped in while I was trying to find pen and paper.

The only likely looking birth registration for Louise is in the December quarter of 1923, GRO reference Greenwich 1d 1480, but as Jan has already advised, you really do need to obtain a copy of the marriage certificate before trying to go any further.

I thought I'd have a little probe around Jules..

I found a death for a Louise Elizabeth AKROYD on Familysearch:-

England and Wales Death Registration Index 1837-2007
    Louise Elizabeth Akroyd
    birth:26 September 1914
    Death reg'd:April 1988
    Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.
    ........................
There is a birth on FreeBMD for a 'LouisA' E. Hill- Mother 'Sutherland' in Aston reg'd 4th 1/4. (Sep. Oct. Dec.) 6d-945
Also for a Harry Hill- Mother Sutherland. 1919 Aston.6d -668
I have not found a marriage for a Mr Hill to a Ms Sutherland in Birmingham but there are a couple elsewhere.

I hope I've not led you astray here.

First of all, if you have not done so already, you need to lay your hands on a copy of the marriage certificate as mentioned in post #2. As this should give you the name and occupation of her father, you can then use this to help identify the correct birth registration for her. It is probably the one that @Ma-dotcom found in post #6, as a birth on 26th September, although in the September quarter, could quite easily not have been registered until the following month. In that case, the registration would be in the December quarter.

Then, by obtaining a copy of that certificate from the GRO, it will give you the names of her parents.

That in turn should help us help you to find them in the 1911 census and so go back from there - a step at a time. :)

No Jules, Fathers are not mentioned here, nor the Mother's Christian names.
forgive my error here, I was concentrating too hard on the Sept you mentioned & transferred it to the actual 4th 1/4 incorrectly.
I've had a look about for others who may mention Louise but so far no luck.
Other than possible mentions in newspapers on her marriage or death, I can not think of an other way than ordering the Birth Certificate to learn her Parents names.
