Lydia Roberts Swain was the spouse of John Cox Williams [my 3X Great-grand Uncle].

She was baptised 10 September 1826 in Axminster, Dorset and her parents were named John and Jane. The source of the baptism is from Anc. - England and Wales, Non-Conformist and Non-Parochial Registers 1567-1970. The Piece Title - Piece 512: Axminster [Wesleyan] 1809-1837.

I have not found Lydia in 1841 census.

In 4th q. 1846 in Bridport Reg. Dist. - vol. 8, page 63, - she married John Cox Williams. They had [according to my research] 9 children born between 1847 and 1864. I have not, as yet, researched any of their off-spring.

I have census records from 1851 up to the deaths of Lydia - 1st q. 1891, Bearminster Reg. Dist. vol. 5a, page 283 - and spouse John - June 1915, Lambeth, London and burial Norwood Cemetery, Norwood Road, Lambeth where he was buried in a reused grave on 1 July 1915. John was a retired Draper.

Currently, my interest is in tracing back the parents of Lydia Roberts Swain.

I hope this is not as difficult a task as some of my other recents requests.:D

I don't know if you have the full entry for the baptism of Lydia Roberts Swain, Colin, but if not it says -

"Lydia Roberts daughter of John and Jane Swain, Bradpole, Dorset, was born 30th Nov 1820 and was baptized 10 Sep 1826 by me, Elijah Morgan".

The baptism took place in Axminster, Devon - Ancestry have placed it in Dorset

I did have the full entry, however I appreciate the correction of the county as being Devon, not Dorset.

Seems a fair distance from where she was born. Wonder why?

Just to add some more on the family - this looks to be the baptism of another child

27th April 1823 - Giles Roberts s/o John and Jane Swain of Bradpole - John's occ is Seaman This was in Bradpole, but there is another baptism record for him 5th April 1822 in Axminster Devon, Wesleyan.
There is also a probate entry for him 1893 London.

I think I may know why there are so many baptism records for siblings of Lydia Roberts Swain, but may be I am wrong.

Could the records of Non-Conformists Baptisms have been centralized after they occurred elsewhere? This appears to be the case of Giles Roberts Swain being baptised in Bradpole, Dorset as of 27 April 1823 and the further notation in Axminster, Devon at a later date?

There is a tree on Ancestry for Giles Roberts Swain, which gives the parents as:-
John Swain 9/11/1790 Burton Bradstock - 16/9/1864 Bridport and has a photograph!
Jane Hooke c1797 Lyme Regis - Sept 1872 Bridport

It might be worth you contacting the tree owner.

    I can find John (b1791) and Jane Swain on the 1851 census - he is Harbour Master in Burton Bradstock - HO107 - 1861 - 297 - 23

    and in 1861 RG09 - 1368 - 19 - 31 - still Harbour Master

Also probate 1/10/1863 for John Swain Harbour Master (died 16/9/1864)

    Colin,

If the Anc tree is the same family, with 9 children to John and Jane, then in 1841 4 of the daughters can be found in Bridport HO107-294-3/65-36

Annoyingly I cannot find John and Jane and, more importantly, no sign of Lydia.

I have found the mother - Jane - with 2 daughters - Jane Emma and Ellen - in the 1841 census, living in Lyme Regis [which is where Jane Hooke was born].
