I'm looking for Matthew Henry Briggs Hattersley, born 1870 in New Barnet Hertfordshire. I have his Army records, but I can't find him in 1871 or 1891. In 1881 I think he is plain old Henry living with Dad Matthew (who was himself the son of a Mathew) born Sheffield 1840 and Mum Janet. 1881 ref is RG11 108;21;35.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I am sure he is. There is a death registration for Matthew Hattersley in 1883, Pancras. Looking for Janet, I am sure I have found her as a widow in 1891 with William and Charles RG12/1054/67/79 in Barnet, Herts.

Then in 1901 she is at RG13/1231/104/24 - Palmerston Villas, East Barnet, Herts

1911 same address as 1901 - although she was a widow, she says she had three children, all still alive.

Janet died in Barnet - Mar qtr 1932 Barnet 3a 661
A tree on Anc give the date as 31st Jan
This tree has no 1871 or 1891 census for the family - so we are not alone in not being able to find them;) (Well Jellylegs found Janet and the 2 younger boys in 1891)
Could Matthew/Henry have been in the army in 1891? Anything on his records that show he had served before?

I have answered my own question at age 19 (1887) - he joined the 10th Hussars #8718 (service record on FMP).

It says he was serving at home until 1904, so probably in a barracks somewhere.

On 20/3/1891 he was admitted to hospital for 7 days having been in Ireland 1889/90. I cannot decipher the place he was when admitted upload_2019-11-14_9-28-37.png
but was transfered to Colchester 2/9/1891.

I thought I read on his army records that he was in hospital in Dublin at some stage in early 1891 (but only for about 7 days)

There is a lengthy article with the title of "The Battle of New Barnet - a Soldier Wounded" in the Barnet Press of the 5th September 1896. I am certain the soldier in question is your Matthew

Will send you an e-mail :)

Very interesting. Definitely our Matthew getting knocked about by some rough types in New Barnet!

@AnnB unearthed another couple of snippets re Matthew, seems that after the school record Chimpy found he came before the beak and was sent to a training ship in Plymouth to set him on the straight and narrow. Mum addmitted he was out of control. He must have turned his life around to then sign up to the Army and go on to have a good career.

Perhaps he was 'required' to have a stint in the Army to keep him out of trouble?

Looking at Matthew Henry Briggs' family. His Grand Dad was Matthew and his Grand Mother Ann Booth. In 1841 Ann is shown as 35 H0107 1338, 49, 14 but in 1851 she is 65! H0107 2338, 333, 22. Would someone have a look at the 1851 to see if that is a transcription error or maybe I have the wrong census entry.

Matthew is 65. Ann is 46 - do you need new glasses Moggsie?

These must be Matthew Henry Briggs' grandparents.
