I'm trying to find her before 1871

In 1871 she is the 'wife' of Francis Fitt Mann English, though they don't marry until 1874. I have found every subsequent census and they are pretty consistent in saying she was born in Croydon, c1847. I even found a birth registration that fits

Just realised I could use the gro index to get her mmn and then look for the marriage

her parents are James Ricketts and Caroline Agate

    1861: RG09, piece 415, folio 91, page 33 - possibly?

Recorded as RICKELLS in the transcription and is the niece of the Head,a George SATE.

That looks good, especially if Sate could be Agate

Looking at the handwriting, it certainly could! :D

    Edited to Add:

Yup! 'Tis AGATE. The handwriting is appalling! :D

    In 1851 HO107/1602/680/19

Mary Ricketts age 9 (everything else marked NK) an inmate, FMP does not tell me where, other than parish of Croydon, but scrolling to the first entry it appears to be some sort of school, and from the entries it looks like it is attached to a workhouse, but I could be wrong.

    I've found James and Caroline in 1861 on FS. RG09 392 130 pg 5

    James b 1820 NK carman
    Caroline age 34, Knockbolt [Knockholt]
    and
    Sarah ... mother age 68, Kingswood ...

I know a Kingswood in Gloucestershire, is that what the ... is? Presumably James's mother, any chance of deciphering a surname?

I've also seen Ancestry hints for Workhouse admissions that could be James. I don't want to delve too deep, just wondering if it would cast any light on where he was born.

still looking for James and Caroline in 1851

I reckon that the Mother's surname is AGATE but has been written AGAIET

It looks like a bad spelling of Surrey for the county: "Sury" but I know not of any Kingswood there. :(

Hmm, there's a 23 year old, unmarried, domestic servant, from Essex, in Kingston upon Thames which might be her, especially if James is in the workhouse ...

... Except she was born in Kent, momentary brain freeze

    It was 1843 ;)
    They wed on 14th August
James's father William was an Engineer and Caroline's dad Richard was a labourer.
Both James and Caroline were "full age".

If you want a copy of the certificate and banns, pop into the Library and look them up for FREE. There will be nominal cost for the copies. Mine charges 20p per page. :)

I know I'm getting over-involved but I've been digging around in the Agates, firstly to show who James Agate (c1866 Woolwich) cousin to Walter Ricketts English was  (son of James, a brother to Caroline, uncle to Mary Ann)

So we came across George Agate earlier, another uncle to Mary Ann Ricketts. He ran the Castle, an inn in Lewisham where he died 4 Nov 1863. His widow (another) Caroline died there 27 Jun 1867 :(

Caroline's administration was proved by "Major Agate gentleman of Beulah Hill Norwood", he is not listed as a relative but a Creditor. which I guess means she owed him ... Who is he?

Looking at the original census record the pob for James is Hereforshire with a small nk added.

Using the GRO index surname Ricketts mmn Agate bring up 2 more children
    1844 Greenwich Sept qtr 5 - 211 - Eliza Caroline mmn Agatt
1846 Croydon Mary Ann - we know this one
    1848 Greenwich Dec qtr 5 - 214 - James mmn Agate

I cannot find another Ricketts/Agate marriage
