Mary would likely be my 3rd Great-Aunt and born to John Evans and Ann Whilding 3rd q. 1844 in Abbeycmhir, Rad. In the census of 1851 [H0107/2494/15/6] and 1861 [RG9/4237/4/7] she is with her parents and her father is a Farmer.
    Ann died 4th q. 1867 vol. 11b, page 121 in Rhayader R.D.

I have what I believe is her marriage in Rhayader R.D. to John WATKIN 3rd q. 1862 and a son Thomas born in Llandewy, Rad. [but cannot find a suitable registration for Thomas].

I have found a possible death of a John Watkins in 3rd q. 1867 in Rhayader, R.D. vol. 11b, page 119 and this seems to fit with the 1871 census [RG10/5599/34/23] in Abbeycymhir, where she is indicated as Widow, with widowed Father John Evans a Farmer and brother Thomas Evans. Her son Son Thomas Watkins is aged 5.

Is this my Mary in 1881 and later?
1881 RG11/5475/97/10 - age 38 and known as Mary PRICE a farmer of 12 acres in St. Harmon - with 2 children Stephen age 7 and Mary age 5. She is a widow. I cannot find a marriage or a death of a likely Mr. Price between 1872 and 1881.
1891 RG12/4584/68/9 - age 47 a widow and farmer stating born Abbeycmhir. Only child with her is Elizabeth age 9. Her brother in law John [an Imbecile] age 38 lives with her.
1901 RG13/5134/82/8 - age 56 a widow and farmer Still has her daughter Elizabeth and bro-in-law John along with a few other folks.
1911 - age 68 a widow [retired from farming] living with her married daughter Elizabeth, son in law Edward Stephen Jones and grandson age 7mos.

I had a look for Stephen's birth registration to see if there were any clues there.
    The GRO has the following:
Stephen PRICE, December quarter 1873, Rhayader Registration District (which covers St Harmon) Volume 11b, page 157, mother's maiden name: WATKINS

If this is your Mary EVANS, then the maiden name should be EVANS. However.... if she had been wed to John WATKIN, she may well have given that as her maiden name.

    The jury's still out.... ;)

There is a marriage of a Mary WATKINS to an Edward PRICE in the September quarter of 1873 (Rhayader 11b/227).

There is also a death shown for an Edward PRICE, aged 26, in the September quarter of 1876 (Rhayader 11b/111)

Not sure if we are any closer...

An update - not certain of it all yet.
1] After the death of John WATKINS, Mary returned with her son to her widowed father John Evans and can be found in 1871 census.
2] In 1873 she married Edward PRICE in Rhayader vol. 11b, page 227. They had 2 children Stephen [see post #5] and Mary Ann [mmn. WATKINS] 1st q. 1876 vol.11b, page 163. I still think this is my Mary and that she may have been confused over terminology of maiden name.
3] It has been confirmed to me that Edward PRICE was the son of Stephen PRICE and Margaret [nee GEORGE] and was born 4th q. 1850 vol. 26 page 281 in Rhayader. He can be found with parents as a 5mos. old in Nantmel in the 1851 census H0107/2494/159/13. Father was a farmer. He was still with his parents in 1861 in Nantmel RG9/44237/37/17.
His father Stephen died 29 Mar. 1871 and his mother died 31 July. 1870.
Edward can be found in 1871 RG10/5599/104/12 as a 20 year in Nantmel with his 6 younger siblings.

After the death of Edward PRICE, Mary then had an illegitimate child that she named Elizabeth [born 8 Apr. 1881 ] in St. Harmon. Elizabeth lived with her widowed mother Mary and John Price [an imbecile and brother of Edward] in St. Harmon until 1909 when she married Edward Stephen JONES in Jun. q. 1909 in Rhayader vol. 11b, page 24.
I have Elizabeth after this until her death 22 Dec. 1955 - [headstone photograph] and Edward Stephen 6 Nov. 1956 - [headstone photograph]

In the 1911 census Mary is living with Elizabeth, her husband and 7mos. old son in Woodhouse, St. Harmon. She continued to live with e family until her death 10 Jun. 1930.

Since I started this screwed up message, I've made quite a bit of headway but I seem to have hit a brickwall :headbang: but "weak heart never won fair lady" so I went looking at trees on A. and the brickwall got worse.

The lady in question was born in 1910 so a reasonable assumption is that she is deceased and secondly she is a 2nd cousin so am reluctant to open the piggybank.

Suggestions on how to proceed would be appreciated - if required I'll provide her name privately.

I'll start by saying that there are very few trees on A. with either spelling of her 1st given name. The variations are GWLYTHIN [G.R.O] and GWLILLYN [unknown]. The G.R.O reference is 1910 J.quarter in Rhayader, vol. 11b, page 119.

Has anyone ever come across such a given name? I can find nothing about about an origin or meaning.

    Gwlythin Matilda Price
Baptism date: 10 Jun 1910, Llansanffraid Cwmteuddwr, Radnorshire
    Father: Stephen
    Mother: Priscilla Ann

The closest I can get to her name in Welsh is Gwlithen which means Dewdrop.

    She married in 1932

    Banns - Llansanffraid Cwmteuddwr
James Samuel Gregg, Bachelor, of the parish of St. Peter, Chester
Gwlithyn Matilda Price, Spinster, of the parish of Llansanffraid Cwmteuddwr
    17th, 24th and 31st July 1932

Marriage date: 11 Aug 1932, Llansanffraid Cwmteuddwr
James Samuel Gregg, Bachelor, Brick Layer, Age 23, Father: James Samuel Gregg, Plumber.
Gwlithyn Matilda Price, Spinster, Age 23, Father: Stephen Price, General Labourer.
2 of the witnesses were Gwlithyn's father, Stephen, and her brother Ralph (John Edward Ralph Price b.1906)

They were only married for 2 years

    Gwlithyn (sic) M Gregg
    Birth year: 1910
    Age: 24
    Death quarter: 2 of 1934
District: Chester, Volume 8A, Page 455

    James Samuel Gregg
Baptism date: 20 Feb 1910, Chester, Cheshire
    Father: James Samuel Gregg
    Mother: Elizabeth

    Death

    James Samuel Gregg
    Birth: 12, October, 1909
    Death quarter: 4 of 1994
    District Chester & Ellesmere Port
    Register number: C40
    Entry number: 145
Date of registration m/y: November 1994

There was a girl born in 1934 in Chester with the surname Gregg and the mother's maiden name Price. Whether she was their daughter I have no idea. As she may still be alive I won't include the name.

Hi Chimp - you're a bloomin' marvel. You've saved me lotsa moolah and saved me umpteen wild goose chases based upon the 4 trees I found on Anc.

James Samuel remarried in 1940. In the 1939 register he was living with his married father - also named James Samuel - mother Elizabeth and an unmarried sibling Reginald. Residence was 5 Hunter's Walk. Chester. His occupation was a Brick layer.

The unnamed daughter born in 1934 wasn't with he father in 1939. As I can't seem to find anything relevant on her I'll leave her in peace.
