I just cannot find him before 1894
Just a quick use of FreeBMD (birth) alternative spellings gives Coin, Cain, Coyne and Cohne. Just a thought.
I could be really wide of the mark here, could this be them in 1861, they have messed the names up something awful. Castle Place, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England RG09, Piece 1993, Folio 21, Page 35 Thomas Cronan, Head, Married, 32, 1829, Labourer, Ireland Caroline Cronan, Wife, Married, 30, 1831, Ireland Michell Cronan, Son, 5 1856, Staffordshire, Wolverhampton Mary Cronan, Daughter, 1, 1860, Staffordshire, Wolverhampton Charles Cacace, Brother, Unmarried, 35, 1826, Labourer, Ireland Sarah Cacace, Mother, Widow, 60, 1801, Ireland Michael Moya, Boarder, Unmarried, 38, 1823, Labourer, Ireland Looking at the original image Michell looks like Michael to me. because of the mixture of spellings of the surname I can't find a birth for Michael but I think this is Mary born 1860 CRONAN, MARY Mother's maiden name: KENAHAN 1860 J Quarter in WOLVERHAMPTON Volume 06B Page 470
Thank you Chimp that has given me something to look into more as it is far more than I have found previously
That is interesting as one of the many family folk lore about Michael Cohen is his surname was altered when he joined the army as the officer taking the attestation couldn't understand his accent. But how you would go from Corcoron to Cohen I'm not sure.
If on FMP you put Cronan as birth surname, Mothers MMN Kenahan with variable ticked, District Wolverhampton, you get Mary 1860 as we know and also get an Ann 1862,MMN Keenan, could be the same family and it just depends on how the registrar thought they heard the name pronounced.
There is a baptism for an Ann Cronin at Saint Mary and John Catholic church in 1862 With Father John and mother Ella Keenan, if my reading of latin names is correct, which possibly negates Ann
Spring Road Sedgley is approx 3 miles from where the family Chimp found lived in 1861 so a strong possibility for being the same family.
Freebmd has a birth for a Michael Careghan 1855 Wolverhampton 6b 446. Careghan certainly doesn’t morph into Cohen but with a bit of imagination it could to Corcoran. I haven’t found anything else for this fellow, no death, marriage or census
GRO gives mothers maiden name as Mulroy, A Mary Mulroy married a Thomas Craven in Bilston 1853. Is that stretching it a bit too far with the name morphing?
I had to track down Bliston and what do you know.....Wolverhampton. If someone could have a look at the original 1861 census (I can’t) I could easily see CRAVEN transcribed as CRONIN. BUT......where does the name CAREGHAN fit in if Mum was Mulroy and Dad was Craven?
I do believe that it could be Craven....Cravan. The third letter looks to me like an a because it ain’t an o.
