I am looking for a birth registration for someone born in August 1938. But the GRO Index is missing entries for between 1935 and 1983.Starts again in 1984 which is weird. Does anyone know why??
Try using FMP or Ancestry or FreeBMD to find out the reference and then you can order the certificate from the GRO with it.
Name? Location? (for anyone with a bit of time on their hands) Or, is it somewhere covered by a local BMD site - details at UKBMD. (Any reference you find there would be for ordering from a local register office, not the GRO.)

I just tried on one of the paid sites by putting in just Smith born 1938 and heaps came up. You can pm me if you like.
