John Freke PALMER was born on 17th September 1794 in Colyton, Devon. He joined the British Army and was stationed in India where his daughter Ellen Jane was born on 16th September 1836.

Ellen’s baptism record at Cannanore, Madras on 21st December states that her mother’s name was Jane.

Jane died in 1838 and was buried on 24th May in Bangalore at the age of 33. John remarried (Catherine ANDREW) on 21st January 1842 in Truro, Cornwall.

What I am unable to find is the marriage between John and Jane and so am unable to discover her maiden name.

    All help gratefully received.

"He joined the British Army and was stationed in India"

Not so. He joined the army of the East India Company. This was not the "British Army".

I think that means that if the marriage was in India, it will not be among the GRO Regimental Registers where we would normally look (incidentally, the Army marriage indexes are notoriously incomplete and you need to apply to GRO even if you haven't found it in the index).

However, I'm afraid I haven't got any useful suggestions.

Thanks @PeterG :) Very helpful as I didn't know that the East India Company had an army!

Can’t find a suitable John / Caroline marriage. One in Lincolnshire in 1824 is the only one. However when he married Jane in Cornwall he is stated as a widower.

The Royal Cornwall Gazette dated 21 January 1842 states that John Freke PALMER, Lieut-Colonel in the Madras Army, married Catherine, eldest daughter of the late H P ANDREW, Esq., of Brodrean, at St Clement's Church yesterday. Given that John Freke was in the Madras Army, Family Search has a baptism at Madras on 25 May 1824 for a John George PALMER son of John F & Caroline PALMER which is followed by a burial record at Trichinopoly, Madras, on 6 December 1829 for a Caroline PALMER who is shown as married. Can't find a marriage record so far, though, to confirm whether this is your John Freke.
