William PAYNE and Alice LUTT married on 13 May 1862 in Rampton.

William died in 1907, but Alice can be found on the 1911 census with her 40 year old daughter Sarah Ann at The Green, Rampton.

Alice says she had 7 children, 4 had died and 3 were still alive.

I can only find birth and baptism records for 4 children - all born Rampton (Chesterton Reg. District):

    James b 1866 - d 1952
    Sarah Ann b 1871 - 1957
    Frederic/k b 1875 - d 1877
    Arthur William b 1877 - d 1916

Would appreciate some other eyes to look for the missing 3. I'm beginning to wonder if they were stillborn, so not registered - or died before they were registered, and she has misunderstood the question about children on the census form.

Can't see any ... could either William or Alice have had an alias, perhaps because they were born prior to their parents' marriage (or even because their own parent was) or because they had a step-parent?

I think I looked at that one but dismissed it because on the ones I found - the GRO said mother's maiden name LUTT. I can't remember now if I checked for a baptism - will take a look - thanks.

Rachel Alice is with her grandparents John and Elizabeth Frances PAIN in 1871, so am sure she is not mine - well, not William and Alice's.

I was just going to say that she was on the 1871 as well. There is a William, son with them but no hint as to whom she belongs. Just that her mother is listed as Alice...

There is a transcript of her baptism on FMP (well, three or four) and on one of them it has in brackets, father Thomas. I wish I could find originals on line, but they don't appear to be :(

Thanks Wendy, but according to the census, they lived in the same place all the time - even had the same neighbours, so don't think they would have moved around and ended up back in the same house.

The only time they are not together is in the 1891 census when Alice is with her sister and husband in Buckland, Hertfordshire, so I did look to see if there was a birth registered in that area, but couldn't find one/any.

The 1891 census you have for William and son Arthur W is correct.

I think she is likely to be the one whose birth Registration District is St. Ives which covered Swavesey - mmn Challis. Thanks for looking though.
