Many thanks for all your replies. I have already got most of the informstion you have kindly provided, except his actual birthdate, and I have not used the 1939 register yet. I guess he never made a will. I will update my Ancestry tree shortly.

Incidentally, does anyone recommend Ancestry or would I be better off subscribing to FMP?

It depends upon the records that you are looking for. There are some on Ancestry that are not on FMP and others on FMP that are not on Ancestry. The Genealogist also has records.

I tend to advise people to visit their local Library, where they can search the records of both Ancestry and FMP for free and use that to help them make a decision. :)

Thank you Chimp. This is all useful info and I agree Sidney's DOB must be 1880, not 1881, following baptism and other info provided by other members today. I now believe he did nitleave a will so will give up looking for it.

Thanks for this. My father told me her maiden name was Holden so I guess the other spellings were misheard or misinterpreted when originally recirded.
Both my parents' surnames were misrecorded in the marriage records of 1951 even though they must have had to produce their birth certificates (which show the correct surnames) at the time
