I expect that many of us know the tale of Androcles and the Lion, which tells of a runaway slave who took a thorn out of a lion’s paw. When Androcles was recaptured, he was sentenced to being put in the arena with a lion, but found his face being licked by the same lion instead of being eaten. :)

But a similar story has been attached to other early martyrs and near martyrs, one of whom is St Jerome, whose day, 30th September, it is. In the Jerome version, a lion limped into a room where Jerome was teaching. Jerome duly removed a thorn and bound up the wound. The lion then insisted on remaining with him, which is why the saint is usually portrayed with a lion at his feet. :)

Somewhat off topic, but the picture in post #1 does not display on my system. Another forum that I frequent updated their version of the Xenforo software in August and had the same issue. In brief, Xenforo by default is converting newly uploaded pictures to ".webp" format rather than ".jpeg". The browser I use (or rather, the specific version of the browser I use on my Mac) does not support webp format so all I see is a blue-question-mark icon.

It is not clear why Xenforo changed this setting. On the other forum, we were able to get it changed back. We felt that jpeg format for images was much more widely used and if someone saved an image out of posting, they most likely did NOT want it in webp format.

(Webp format was developed by Google and finalized in 2018. Jpeg format goes much further back--25+ years?)
