According to old Googly Woogly calico was originally hand decorated, either by hand or by impressing a pattern from an inked block.

I go along with BD - Calico Printer: a person who coloured or printed calico, a brightly coloured cloth.

Dartford, where they lived, had several establishment for calico and silk printing.

You all got there before me on this one, but my g-g-grandfather was a calico printer in Yorkshire. I've got a few calico printing ancestors.

I have calico painter ancestors in London. I think the painters became known as printers as the tech improved, so they are really the same thing
