The 1851 census has Joseph Ashton living at 40 Brunswick Street, Southwark with what appears to be an occupation of Shotfounder (piece 1557, folio 76,page 57)

Would this be someone who creates bullets and shot?

    Thanks. :)

To make lead shot, you pour molten lead from the top of a shot tower (inside, of course) and through a sieve to break the lead into droplets, then collect the cooled little balls of shot. "Founder" relates to foundry, I suppose. Was it an industrial area?

A bit of a mixture, really. After this time he seems to have been working for a Tea merchant...

And of course the shot tower at Lambeth, near Southwark, was still there till the Festival of Britain in 1951

I think you could have shot-founders who ran shops. They would make shot out of lead for anyone who wanted to buy it  It was an occupation with a very high death rate because of the poisinous qualities of the lead they used.

He was in his early 50s when he died. No idea as to the cause, though... ;)
