Old Railway Routes

Here is a site that does overlays of old railway lines. I have found rail lines that were in our area that have been pulled up and made into bypasses.

Sorry, Should have said that it has current routes but if you look closely at the map it also shows where rail lines used to be too. It shows Knighton railway as is now but on closer inspection it also shows a siding that ran behind the present station. This was where the train would go to have timber and products from the Knighton Coal & Lime Company loaded. Whereas Presteigne no longer has any remnants of it's railway but the route is still shown on the map.

It has a lot of lines that have gone, including old sidings at military bases
(e.g. near me at Bramley) and at least one that I think was never included on public maps while extant , to Burghfield ordnance depot. It does seem peculiar that Derby is not named, but I wonder whether they are still adding details in that area.

We just get jealous when people talk of 'their' railway lines......you don't realise how wonderful it is to have any sort of railway line, until you haven't got one! Still, we can have a very nice walk where the old line used to be.......

Us too, Ann. A lot of old lines have been kept as walking/riding/cycling routes.

Thanks Chimp. I've learnt something new this morning. Found there was an old station near where we go walking - I often wondered what was there.

I think gov'ts didn't realise what a sturdy (lost the word) they had when they began to rip up rail lines & allow cartage/haulage to go onroad, not to mention ongoing cost to road upgrades. Sure it may have given jobbies to truckies-if they could afford it- but how many railway persons lost work.? Will stop here because I know not of what I speak. I do so like trains tho'.

Buses haven't got the same appeal & keep changing routes.

Over this way, old railway stations seem to be recycled into pubs, heritage centres and museums.
Like Ma, I would rather they were railway stations.
Now we only have regional stations, that's if the line is still operational.

Our daughter had only ever ridden on steam trains on special days out here and there. When we took her, for the first time aged about five, to catch a modern electric train into town, she refused to get on - "But there's no engine pulling the carriages!"

I suppose we are very fortunate in still having a railway station in our village. We make good use of our Senior Railcards on journeys from our station -- we can catch a train to join the East Coast Mainline at Doncaster for north-bound journeys (or Newark for south-bound), or the west coast route at Sheffield -- and last week we spent a day shopping at Meadowhall with a direct train there.

Long wanted to do his, haven't yet, so many lost opportunities. Still I now find it hard to get out of the house let alone onto a train.
One day it'll come along the train I want.....
