In another thread (https://genealogy-specialists.com/threads/palmer-family.12184/) I raised the issue of Jesse James Palmer and what became of him, we didn't quite manage to work that one out, but he is not the only one of his siblings to do a disappearing act on me, since they stay (so far as I know) in the Bristol area I am starting a new thread here. Brief recap: James Palmer, who was born in 1840 in St Pancras, London, to John Palmer and Mary Woods from Norfolk, his family moved to the Bristol area by 1843. His mother died in 1854, his father remarried to Hannah Derrick. James and his siblings: Sarah Ann 26 Jan 1835 Burston, Norfolk George 29 Mar 1837, Burston, Norfolk James Jan-Mar 1840 St Pancras - Aug 1914 Brislington, Somerset Catherine Phillis & Rachel Emma 14 Oct 1841 Shimpling, Norfolk Mary Jane Oct-Dec 1843 Bristol St Augustine John Jan-Mar 1850 Clifton, Gloucestershire half sister: Ellen E abt 1854 Bristol St George So James is the only one I have spent any time on: he married (1) Louisa Jenkins Wheeler in 1859 and (2) Eva Angelina/Evangelina Guppy in 1898 He had the following children with his first wife, Louisa: (all born Clifton, Gloucestershire, except Francis born Brislington, Somerset) Henry James 1860-1860 Jesse James 1861- unknown (see previous thread) Henry William 1863 - unknown -- last seen in 1891 where he is enumerated twice, with his parents and with his new bride, she is found in 1901 as the wife of another man (they actually marry in 1910) the last of his children was born in 1894 James George 14 Sep 1867-Jun 1946 Burnham on Crouch, Essex Charles Thomas 25 Sep 1869-Sep 1950 Bristol Thomas John Apr-Jun 1876 -- last seen in 1891 in Brislington Fanny Emma Jan-Mar 1878 -- last seen in 1891 in Brislington Francis John Apr-Jun 1881 -- last seen in 1891 in Brislington Louisa died in 1896, presumably these last 3 children were affected by that death and their father's remarriage, and this may be why they are proving hard to find With his second wife, Evangelina: Dorothy Louisa 26 Jan 1899 Brislington- Jan-Mar 1972 Surrey John Herbert 2 Oct 1901 Brislington-24 Jun 1967 Bath, Somerset So the ones in bold are the troublesome ones (plus Jesse James but we already tried to sort him in the previous thread). This is just a summary, if anyone feels like tackling someone and I haven't given enough info just poke me and more will be provided if I can. Otherwise I will post more starting with Henry when I get more energy
There is a Frances E Palmer on the 1901 census working as a linen maid at the Clifton Down Hotel RG13/2368/87/7 born 1878 Bristol Your girl perhaps?
Thomas John Palmer there is a marriage in 1898 19 November to a Sarah Stroud in Aldbourne Wiltshire says he is a woodman father Henry Palmer deceased a woodman witnesses James Stroud and Mary Ann Hawkins maybe not there is a henry william palmer b 1850 in aldbourne
Jesse James Palmer...1871 in Clifton, 9 years old with mother Louisa, a laundress, Henry, James and Charles. 1881 V A S sailor with father James and mother Louisa and Henry, James, Charles, Thomas, Fanny, John, Bellevue Road Keynsham. 1891 seamans cook with James and Louisa and Henry, James, Charles, Thomas, Fanny and a new brother Francis age 10. Brislington Somerset There is a marriage in 1904 in Bristol of a Jesse Palmer. Other than that I can see not much else. Could be at sea. OOps sorry just read ALL you previous thread on him.
There is an Army Service record for your Henry William PALMER, who joined the Gloucestershire Regiment on 4 August 1882, on FMP so can't give you full details but it looks as if he was tried, impeached and discharged in 1894. However, Ancestry also shows that there is a Chelsea Pensioner record for him. There is a Henry Wm PALMER who is admitted to the Grove Park Workhouse in Greenwich on 8 January 1909, aged 47, a Carpenter - could this perhaps be your Henry William? Possible death registration in the March qtr 1921 at Bristol reg district for a Henry PALMER, aged 58. Janet
Thank you. Will try and follow up on these possibilities today. I was looking for a death before 1910 as that is when his wife remarried to the man she'd been living with for at least 10years. His wife had died in 1903 in the Lunatic Asylum . Or perhaps it was a case of not hearing from him in 7 years and believing him dead. Then he turns up in Bristol to die
Well Ancestry had it as Frances G, and although I often double-check single initials (as they are often difficult to transcribe) I failed to do so on that one, I've added it but there was also a Fanny Elizabeth and a Fanny Emma born aound the same time in Bedminster and I haven't ruled them out
Sorry that should say Fanny Emily Looks like the Fanny Elizabeth died aged 3 Fanny Emily married in 1903 in Manor Park, so this 1901 could still be her [edit] I take that back she's with her parents in 1901 in East Ham, so we have found my Fanny Emma
Sorry I have completely lost my oomph Henry does indeed have a record on Ancestry, but it is part of Fold3 to which I do not subscribe . I did find an intriguing William Henry Palmer in 1911 who claims to be widowed, living with a woman not his wife with whom he clearly has had children, as they both have Palmer in their name. I've compared his signature with the signature on the marriage of my Henry William and they aren't similar. So that's probably a dead end Still can't trace Fanny although we do now have a definite 1901 census for her. I shall probably just put these aside and await the return of my mojo (whenever that will be )
