I have been trying to find a link between a Edward William PASLEY born in Bengal in 1837 to a James PASLEY of Craig (Scotland) in 1694.
I have checked all the free Indian sites for Pasleys and have recorded a lot of information. I have also checked the Family Search site for Indian records. There are quite afew sites listing the Pasley family tree but thes is I quite a bit of conflicting evidence on the web about the family and in particular that his father was either Gilbert John Pasley or George Pasley.
I have found a will for an Ann Pasley naming her only son Gilbert John as Executor of her will. I have found a marriage reference for a George Pasley to Anna Gee in Poonamallee in 1798.
On one web site Gilbert's parents are recorded as George and Anne - he was born in 1798.
On a second site his parents are recorded as Gilbert and Hannah but I believe this is incorrect as Gilbert died in 1781 which means Gilbert John was 60 in 1841 not the age on the 1841 census in Bath, in which the age is recorded as 40 which would tie in with the 1798 birth. And other information records that there was only one child from that marriage - a daughter Susan.
    So where to from here...................
How do I go about getting a copy of Gilbert's birth registration in India?
How do I get a copy of the marriage of George and Anna?
How do I find George's birth registration?

I am afraid that I am getting totally confused with this part of my research and I am seeking informed suggestions on what to do next.

Apologies if the above seems a bit confused, but I am!!
    David

Now found George Boles Pasley born 3 dec.1831 baptised29 March 1832 Neemuch Bengal mother Amelia father Gilbert John. You have an interesting family with George being a Civil Servant in Bengal and Gilbert James rising to Maj Gen in HM Indian Army. I would think that Boles in George's name could be Amelia's maiden name but can't verify it. Can't find her birth in India or the marriage. Interesting that George also married Cecilia born in India. Lots of census information that will put flesh on the bones in your tree. Didn't find a connection to the Scottish Pasleys. Good luck with your search. Val.

One of the constituted attorneys of Gilbert Kennedy Pasley ans Edward Fortescue Penning Pasley, two of the Executors. There's also a Will that says mostly the same but names his wife as an Executor, but leaves it all to Gilbert Kennedy Pasley. Hope to have been of some help. At least you know the parents of Edward Willian now for sure.... Val...

    Hi Val
Many thanks for all your hard work. All the names that you have found and put in your replies are part of the family.
Amelia's surname was Kennedy which probably explains it being the middle name for Gilbert. And Gilbert Kennedy married into the TUSON family hence my keen interest.
I was wondering if George Boles was named after his grandfather (George) and grandmother's maiden name (Boles). So I tried a search on that without success.
This is a very interesting family with merchants and military members. And there is an East India Company component as well which explains the family being in India.
I have printed your replies and will study them alongside the downloads that I have made - I know you have given me a little more information which could help demolish this brick wall.
Maybe a membership to FIBIS may be worthwhile?
    Thanks again
    David

    Hello Val

I actually do have a subscription to findmypast and yes I have found some good stuff on it.
I'm also a member of the NZ Society of Genealogists which gives me access to the National Archives Discovery site where I have found some wills which make interesting reading. I just need to crack the Indian records somehow.
    Regards
    David

Even for a short period of time - just a year, for instance - would certainly enable you to access their services. :)

Well I tried twice today to subscribe and got error messages both times - so I have emailed them seeking clarification on why the application doesn't recognise my shipping address. Pity that as I was looking forward to posing my queries on their forum. I'll just have to be patient and wait the response.

Yes, that was I thought for a time. And like you I couldn't find a birth. But as stated earlier in this thread we have discovered her name was Kennedy. Thanks for looking though, appreciate your interest.

    Hello All,
I am researching for a relative of her grandfather, Edward Fortescue Pennington Pasley. Would anyone know if this line through George Pasley and Anna Gee is connected to Sir Thomas Pasley, 1734. Would be fun if it was so. Pierre

    Hello Pierre

According to the research that I have completed George's father was Gilbert Pasley b 1731. One of his brothers was the Thomas that you mention.

    Hi David,
My research does not show a George Pasley being a son of Gilbert. There does not seem to be anyone between Gilbert, 1754 and Charles William 1782.
There is a huge gap but I cannot find any proof.
    Thanks for your input. Pierre

    Hello Pierre

I have set out below a couple of extracts from my PASLEY database showing a link between George and Gilbert. I have never been able to find a birth registration for George, there is a suspicion, jointly held with other researchers on FIBIS, that George's mother was an Indian pady whom Gilbert had a liaison with.

Gilbert's will (dated 1781) leaves money to a George and Charles when they reach the age of 21.They were in England at the time of his death so must have been teenagers at least.

    1. GEORGE PASLEYwas born about 1762 in India. He died on 13 March 1798. Hemarried Anna Gee on 28 February 1796 (by the Rev. R Owen). She was born in 1779.

      Notes for George Pasley:

Email from Robert Athol, Archivist & Records Manager Lincoln's Inn 12 November 2014..............

Our admissions register shows that Pasley was admitted to the Inn on 6th November 1784 and is listed as being the eldest son of Gilbert Pasley of Madras. A quick search for 'Gilbert Pasley Madras' in Google has thrown up numerous references to a Gilbert Pasley working in Madras as a surgeon during this period. It is not confirmed in any of the references I have found, but it is just possible that this could indeed be the same Gilbert Pasley as is listed as being the father of George although you would need to do further digging on that to prove anything as many of the sources claim Gilbert Pasley had no children. There is also no mention of George actually being called to the bar so it is possible he didn't finish his studies here.

In the 18th century, most people were admitted to Lincoln's Inn after they had completed a first degree at University so were usually about 21 or 22 when they were admitted, although any age roundabout this would be reasonable (±3 years I would say). Unfortunately though this doesn't help you with narrowing down the birth date of George Pasley!

As you will have noticed the birth year is a supposition. Without records of both birth and death it is impossible to accurately confirm his birth.

    Regards
    David

Many thanks David for all the wonderful information. I have a busy day ahead of me. I hope you do not mind if I sign by the name of Anne. Much confusion on the day I first posted although I have sort of got used to Pierre.
Thankyou again, it is much appreciated.
    Regards, Anne
