Am I alone in being immensely (irrationally?) irritated when a collection of items that can be quantified numerically is referred to as "an amount"? Eg "an amount of people". Why not "a number of people"?

Do not think I have come across it, but if I did I would just assume the person was an ignorant prat

Yep! All the time. I think the English language is changing but not for the better. Another that annoys me are well known journalists referring to children as kids and police as coppers. In the paper and on National tv news. Not much room there for young ones to learn respect for the police force.

It's just as bad when they use the correct words, but don't know how to say them. In particular, sekaterry and exekatif.

Thanks for the support. I thought I might be being hyper-sensitive, but I wrote that after I had encountered three examples in separate articles in one day.

Have you noticed that you can't 'speak' or 'talk' to people nowadays? You can only 'have a conversation' with them.

And don't get me started on 'reaching out'.

'Finding Closure' after a death in the family is one that really eats at me. If you really loved that person you never find 'closure' you just gradually become accustom to living with the pain of losing them. Has anyone really ever said 'oh no I'm over them now because I found closure' !?!

Don't start me... But I think my two current hates are people who say things are "so fun" instead of "so much fun" and a certain popular game show host who insists on saying "JOGraphy"

What else would you expect of a game show host?

My current peeve are news reports of unfortunate happenings where a person "had" an event done to them, when the likelihood is obviously the opposite.

And I hate the word "military" being used as a noun. It's OK as an adjective - military uniform, military manoevers - but not "joined the military".

My husband died 12 years ago last week and 'finding closure' grates with me as well.
