Well that sound very likely Jane ,thank you. I've been switching between Henry John & John b. 1848. Henry snr may have not yet- at that time- taken on the tanner occupation. When I think of the various names & place names which are misheard or miss-spelled these sound quite likely. I shall wander about in that are & see also what other early notes I can dig up. So many notes from early searches saved in quite odd places or lost with computer malfunction. Feel free to bark on Jane
As "Berry Pomeroy" has been abbreviated to fit in, could the last place be an abbreviation for Camelford?
So this unusual little building could be John's birthplace: https://www. flickr.com/photos/tollhouses/2103443147/
I checked that one Moff thanks, it's in Cornwall. Meantime 1841 census has a Henry Clarke 29 now a tanner b.Devon with wife Caroline 25, son Isaac 6 & John 16 mths, all b. Devon res. Totnes. HO107; Piece: 213 Folio: 15; Page: 24; A Caroline Clarke death is registered in newton Abbott Jun 1/4 1846. perhaps on the way to London.
Getting back to the 3rd one. Could the F[superscript]d be an abbreviation of Field rather than Ford? Even then, I can't spot anything obvious.
Finding Henry as a tanner does give me more confidence that the family in the Kenn / Kennford area is the right one, and that 'Cainford' (or whatever it says) on the 1851 census is the enumerator's attempt to record what Henry was saying. When Henry married Mary Randel in 1851 he made his mark rather than signing his name, so probably wouldn't have been able to help the enumerator with spelling. You have to feel sorry for census enumerators trying to interpret unfamiliar placenames spoken in a broad accent from faraway places. One of the most garbled I've seen is a chap in Witney recorded as being born in Alsoun. It turned out to be Halesowen.
That's what made me wonder if it could be Kennford - I tried saying Cainford in a Devonian accent and suddenly found myself uttering Kennford......thank goodness I do this in the privacy of my own home Ann
Oh, I wish we could have eavesdropped! It's a lovely accent and reminds me of some very dear relations from that part of the world. There are some sound recordings of some Devon folk reminiscing here, for anyone who'd like a little taster: http://www. dialectsarchive.com/oral-histories
That Caroline Clarke was a 14 year old girl who died in Torquay (Torquay coming under Newton Abbot registration district) Ann
I've been trying to track little Isaac. Not sure if this is something or nothing. A parish register transcript has a Henry Clark marrying Catherine Wheaton on 28 September 1834 at Dartington (not far from Totnes). Is 'Catherine' really Caroline? An Isaac son of Caroline Wheaton was baptised 14 April 1833 Aylesbeare (residence: Newton Popleford). He ought to be nearer 8 than 6 in 1841, but perhaps worth considering. There is an earlier baptism at Aylesbeare of a Caroline Wheaton (born and baptised 1816, daughter of George & Caroline). That would be a good fit with the age of Caroline Clark on the 1841 census. All very speculative though - the original registers (available via FMP) may shed more light.
Good clues thank you again Jane, I viewed that Bapt: [May 1st 1816 Bapt.Caroline dtr of George & Caroline -yeoman- Honiton -Private] so she may not have survived, but just above that one a little earlier was: Caroline Wheaton dtr of Isaac, a carpenter & Sarah at Harpford b. 30 Oct 1814 Bapt.Newton Poppleford, parish of Harpford.-14+ miles from Kennford. AnnB> how would you pronounce Harpford?
Odd that Sue, as is the way with maps & Counties (over there ). This one shows Harpford just 1.4 miles from N. Poppleford. I wonder if that's the 'Parish of' covering nearby ttowns & Villages? Here I thought I'd go to Brekky today but maybe later...
There are two........Harpford where you found it and I found it on the map, turned away and now it's gone. Then Harford over next to Cornwood and South Brent.
Yes taa sue, saw them both. it doesn't pay to look away nor scroll the map too far, I lose so many places that way- have taken to taking a snip of places I want to keep an eye on. I do favour Harpford, being so close to Newton Poppleford, they have yummy names, don't they?
