John William Platt born 23/1/1829 in Bury, Lancashire he married Mary Ann Wilde apparently on 23/11/1850 in Adelaide SA. I'm interested in going back further in this line as everything I have is in pencil or red pen meaning I'm unsure if correct or not. I have John's parents as George Platt b. 1802 Bury Lancashire d. 1881 Married Rachel Greenhalgh 1823 Rachel born 1804 died 1881 Lancashire George's father was Jeremy/Jeremiah Platt b. 1763 Married Alice Royley 1799 Alice born 1762 Jeremy/Jeremiah's father was James, So it seems like I have info but a lot of it was when I first started out many years ago and took Ancestry as gospel Any confirmed info or otherwise greatly appreciated.
Hi Matt, Pop into lan-opc.org.uk and you could find all you want. Lancashire OPC has lots of info from Bishops Transcripts. Its easy to follow too. Here we find John Platt baptised 15/2/1829 son of George Platt, printer, and Rachel at Emmanuel Holcolme, Lancashire. He was born 23/1/1829 George Platt a calico printer and Rachel Greenhalgh were married St Mary the Virgin Bury 30/3/1823.
George Platt son of Jeremy Platt and Ally baptised 7/8/1803 born 8/5/1803 St Mary the Virgin Bury. You will find siblings as well on Lancashire OPC. Jeremy Platt married Alice Royley 29/5/1799 St Mary the Virgin Bury. He was a block printer. Ill leave the rest to you to explore Lancashire OPC and get all the details..... Have fun Im sure you will
I’m not sure how you will sort out Rachel Greenhalgh as there are quite a few born around 1804. There is an Alice Royley born 1762 All Saints Wigan father Thomas Royley but going back that could be Riley.
1841 census. Living in Green St, Radcliffe, Bury Lancashire. All born Lancashire. George Platt Male 38 1803 Cal. Printer Rachael Platt Female 39 1802 Jeremiah Platt Male 15 1826 John Platt Male 12 1829 Helen Platt Female 6 1835 Alice Platt Female 1 1840
So I've looked on the lan-opc website and when looking for Jeremy's birth I have come up with 2 results. One born 1763 and the other 1778. I know I have the 1763 one mentioned in my first post but how do I confirm which is correct?
Well just as a guess....born 1778 would be marrying Alice at age 21. The other would be much older at 36. Were both fathers James? Ill have a look too.
I have just checked Family Search census of 1841. Jeremiah Platt is 60 and Alice is 60 giving their birth years 1777-1781. There is John 25, Mary 20, William 20, Joseph 15 and James is 1 (obviously not their child) Then in 1851 Jeremiah is 72 and a pauper (calico printer) and Alice is 71 son John is 38.....have you checked Family Search. Its free.....and fairly easy to follow. Note 1841 ages are hit and miss.
Have I got this right, ages in the 1841 were rounded up to the nearest five years, except for children?
Sorry. I have not a clue. Ages fit for father Richard but there is a James born to him but no Richard....looks like heads or tails here
There's a James Platt born 1839 in Bury registration district. No Mother's maiden name, which usually means they are illegitimate. PLATT, JAMES mmn - GRO Reference: 1839 D Quarter in BURY UNION LANCASHIRE Volume 21 Page 284
For the 1841 census, the enumerators' instructions were to round ages down to the nearest 5 years for all aged 15 and over. Not all did this and you may still find some with the actual age recorded.
Oops, thanks for that correction Jan, I'd better note that down somewhere although I don't envisage using the 1841 census again, then I'll make another note to remind me where that note is.
James Platt baptised 5/12/1841 St Paul Royton Lancs father Peter Cooper mother Mary Platt. Lancs OPC Looks like the son of 20 year Mary on the 1841
