I'm having issues researching further on my paternal family tree. I have gotten back to David potter from 1794 which I believe he may be from Scotland (and then later in the tree the Potter eventually settle in Canada). Any advice would be appreciated. I believe his child to also be of the same name 1833-1915 and his spouse Eliza Weese
I keep coming back to David Morrison Potter as in the previous thread (highlighted above) The 1871 census of Elora Centre Wellington Ontario (Family Search) and we have David M Potter with wife Betsey Potter, both have nationality as Scots but both born in the US. He born c1827 and her c1831. With them is John Potter (along with children of David and Betsey)age 41 and widowed. I have found a couple of Eliz(s)abeth Weese's but no Eliza and definitely no marriages. US marriages are notoriously hard to find unless you know where they married which defeats the whole purpose of the search.
There is a death on January 8th 1915, aged 85, for an Eliza Potter, married with fathers name Wiese in Dereham, Ontario. An image can be found on Familysearch (as long as you are logged in). Code: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-67Q1-LY?from=lynx1UIV7&i=1525
Cynthia Ann Potter married John Burks in Dereham with sister Phebe Potter as witness, father David mother Eliza but I’m certain I found this family on a Canadian census and what put me off is that David Potter, father was said to be Dutch....will search for it again. Hopefully it will turn up. Wiese does sound Dutch or German rather than Scots.
David Potter 1881 with wife Eliza is a carpenter. Warren 16 and Montolo 9. Of Dutch Origin but born Ontario. 1871 both age 38 with Cintha (sic) 16, Warren 6 and Moutland 9 Death of Phebe Boyer, father David Potter, mother Eliza Weise Sept 10 1920 Dereham Ontario. Birthplace of father and mother, Ontario.
That is the family I'm getting stuck at (David and Eliza). In her death certificate she lists as fathers name 'Wiese', and unknown mothers maiden name. And I believe on one of her children's marriage cert she was listed as Eliza Rude. I'm so confused. I cannot for the life of me find a marriage certificate for David or Eliza. Through verbal discussions about lineage years ago with my late grandfather, he referred to his Potter name as Pennsylvania Dutch. I believe David potters father (also David) was first generation Canadian may have lived in the USA a short time?
Have you searched for a marriage of Eliza Wiese to a ‘Rude’. She may have married David Potter as Eliza Rude, being a widow.???? It’s miserable and wet here today so nothing better than getting stuck into some searching around for you. Just found something whilst having a quick look on Google....Eliza Weise Rude marrying David Potter and mention of a John Petrey. Will get to it after some home duties.
Hmm, I'm going around in circles here. When their son married his mother's name was given as Eliza Rude. Marriage - 01 Feb 1898, Norwich, Oxford, Ontario, Canada Montlou Potter, age 26 - Bachelor, Plasterer - Dereham Father's Name - David Potter Mother's Name - Eliza Rude Cornelia May Purdy, age 19 - Spinster - Nr, Norwich Father's Name - Ira Purdy Mother's Name - Sarah A Sherwood When their daughter Phoebe Boyer (nee Potter) died of acute appendicitis in 1920, her mother was given as Eliza Weese
Same here. I don't understand. There are no children listed with any other names (re: 2nd marriages?) This blip in time has put me at a road block.
Of course there is always that as Eliza was married already she couldn’t marry David and so they happily moved on together.
Another thought..... As they were apparently Pennsylvania Dutch and there was a large community of Mennonite/Amish in Dereham could this be the reason for lack of official marriage registration?
Just so everyone knows... this is my husband's family and Asheltiern81 and I have been communicating all weekend. David Morrison Potter is a different family..
