My Walker and Lawrence families clustered in Staffordshire from around the 1830s. However I have hit Brickwalls trying to trace the family origins of Eliza Ann Quare, born around 1810 in Warwickshire, Worcestershire or Staffordshire. She married William Henry Lawrence on 26 Jun 1831 at St Peter and Paul, Aston Juxta and is listed with him and children on the 1841 England Census. She died before the next Census where Williamis listed with his 2nd wife Caroline Wheatley/Whateley. There are multiple spelling variations for her surname but I cannot find any likely marriages, births or baptisms that might give me the name of her parents. Maybe she was married previously but I have no leads on that, either.

I started looking for a Quare/Dance marriage. Somehow that kinda has a nice ring to it. :)

Doesn't help with the birth, but just to tie up some loose ends her death was registered in the September quarter of 1844, Lichfield registration district, volume 17, page 40 as Eliza Ann Lawrence.

She is Eliza Anne Lawrence in the Lichfield St Michael parish burial records:

I can't find anything for an Eliza Ann(e) Quare, but there is this death notice which appeared in the Staffordshire Advertiser for the 27th August 1836
Monday last, after a lingering illness, aged 47, Mr Edward Quare, Gresley-row, Lichfield, many years foreman Messrs. Holmes and Butcher, coach-builders, of that city.
Edward would have been just of an age to be Eliza's father. On Ancestry there is a marriage of an Edward Quare to Sophia Eliza Hill at St Giles in the Field, Holborn on the 6th January 1811. There is also a Freedom of the City of London Admission Papers (Sadler's Company) entry for an Edward Quare (born 1789, son of Daniel) granted in 1818.

    All totally supposition.........

One of the witnesses to the marriage was an Edwd QUARE so is likely to be a relative of Eliza Ann and both Henry & Eliza were stated as of the parish.

Now this would need more research on your part, but William LAWRENCE is shown as a Coach Body Maker in the 1841 census. In the 1861 census of Aston, Birmingham (RG9/2186, folio 125, page 16) is an Edward Moore QUARE, aged 47, born Middlesex, lodging in the household of William MITCHELL & family, who is described as a Coach Body Maker. There is a birth/baptism at Saint Paul Covent Garden on 28 September 1813/18 August 1814 for an Edward Moore QUARE son of Edward & Sophia QUARE which seems to fit the bill.

Edward QUARE is in Lichfield, Staffs in the 1841 census - now states born in Staffordshire - HO107/1008/4, folio 41, page 9, together with an Emmanuel QUARE aged 9 & Evelina QUARE aged 15. Evelina is baptised (non-conformist) on 16 February 1826 at British Lying in Hospital, Endell St, Holborn, parents Edward & Sophia QUARE, 427 Oxford Street, Coach Maker.

Edward snr & Sophia QUARE obviously moved to Lichfield at some stage prior to 1828 as there are 3 baptisms of children to them there, Caroline in 1828 & Emmanuel & Ermina Maria both in 1832. It all fits together beautifully except that I cannot find a baptism for Eliza Ann anywhere!

Edward QUARE snr is buried at Lichfield in 1836 - parish register image available to view on FMP. He does seem to have left a Will as he appears on the Death Duty Index for the year 1836, so if nothing else a copy of his Will should hopefully prove whether Eliza Ann is his daughter as he died before she did but after her marriage to Henry LAWRENCE.

Will need more research on your part but QUARE does not seem a particularly common name.

Well done for all that Janet - I had to go away for a while, so you've filled in the other bits I had started to find very nicely :D I like the coach builder/maker and sadler connections - all ties together. I also like the fact that Sophia's middle name was Eliza.......

Thank you- I already suspected that was her death record from FreeBMD but it is a common name combination so I would have had to order a few to get the right one, I suspected. Wow!

As Edward Quare's father's name was Daniel (from his Freedom Admission Papers), I thought this was interesting. I suspect this Daniel was related to Edward and it shows the family were originally Quakers.
    Stamford Mercury 2nd April 1724
Yesterday the Corpse of Mr Daniel Quare, the famous Watchmaker, was interred in the Quaker's Burying Ground in Bunhill Fields; most of the Watchmakers in Town attending his Funeral.

Daniel Quare, the watchmaker, has his own page on Wikipedia

Woohoo! Thank you Chimp, Sis and AnnB! I have been searching for Eliza Ann(e)'s origins forever but don't have access to a lot of stuff, being in Australia - I have to know something is IN a database before I subscribe... and London baptisms were not on my horizon! I knew about the Lawrences being in the coach-building trades and my GG Grandfather George Walker was a Wheelwright so there is some sort of likelihood the professions would collide. Branches of the Lawrence family were also based in London so the grapevine might have carried Eliza's name to the Lawrences in Staffordshire. Without direct sight of documents myself I will accept this person Eliza Anne Quaie/Quare as my ancestor and put her details on my Ancestry tree. Absolutely gob-smacked! <|:)

Well spotted Chimp - perhaps I should start eating peanut butter! Only trouble is I hate it. It is amazing what can be found when we all put in our two-pennyworth, isn't it. Forums like ours are a wonderful resource.
