    There's a saying that although officers give the orders it's the sergeants who control the fighting, which to me seems logical because sergeants usually have the most battlefield experience, they've been there, done that.

    and don't those two lads in the front look very young, something like the Drummer Boys in infantry regiments of earlier times.

    Notice also that not all are wearing Puttee's, some have normal trousers, these could be Artillery Clerks etc
