Hope it is ok to post this here, it's a news article in my local e-newspaper which I found very interesting http://www. newhamrecorder.co.uk/news/feature_restoration_of_world_s_oldest_steam_coaster_in_royal_victoria_dock_1_3757060
My friend Dave is the Project Director; almost certainly a better Project Director than a batsman when we played cricket together !! I should add that I think it's a splendid project.
Lovely old ship. So many of these old vessels are being lost as trusts run out of money - it's good to see one being restored to its former glory.
Like so many things from our past - we don't know what we have/had until it is - lost forever. Thanks for posting and to Dave and the rest of his team - "Good Luck".
Absolutely brilliant - and how wonderful that she will be so close to where she was built (and I'm not just saying that because of what the Thames Ironworks football team later became......) Ann
Oh Ann, I can't resist a bit of local history , but I always wonder how everything gets to be about football how do you get from 'Irons' to 'Bubbles'? ... just wondering
Sorry, but I'm not really football mad - was once, but not any more If you had grown up in my house with a West Ham mad father and grandfather, you would find it hard to forget them As for Irons to Bubbles......not connected at all really. The Irons is obvious (Thames Ironworks) - Bubbles is a bit more complicated, but is well explained at http:// en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I'm_Forever_Blowing_Bubbles Ann
The Thames sailing barge 'Cambria' was fully restored. Family story goes that my Grandad worked on it, but unable to confirm it so far.
