Have received the Death cert today.

    When and where died:
4th November 1919, Belmont, West Street, Knighton, Radnor. U.D.
    Name and surname:
    William Williams
    Sex:
    Male
    Age:
    63
    Occupation:
    Baptist Minister
    Cause of death:
Strangulation by Hanging. He being of unsound mind did kill himself.
Signature, Description and Residence of informant:
Certificate received from Fred ? Coroner for the eastern division of the county of Radnor. Inquest held 6th November 1919
    When Registered:
    7th November 1919

    It is as Huncamunca said it would be. But at least it has given me two pieces of information;
    • A date of inquest
    • The place of death
I had 2 pieces of information of where he died. Newspaper report and Probate. One person at work would not believe me when I told him that William died at Belmont House, (he knew better) wonder if he will believe me now.....doubtful.....

It's a real shame not to be able to find a copy of the inquest in the papers. I have tried to find a report by just looking for inquests at the right time, but with no luck. Unfortunately, 1919 is not a well represented year (s*d's law )

Anyway, will keep trying, but don't hold your breath - don't want a blue Chimp!

. . . or maybe Fred L. Green? The Knighton section of the 1923 Kelly's directory for South Wales lists Frederick Lyttleton Green (of the firm Green & Nixson) as 'solicitor & commissioner for oaths, & coroner for Eastern division of county'.

Not sure about the name of the Registrar . . . maybe A.E. Lewis? (The directory's no help there: by 1923 the Registrar of Births & Deaths for the Knighton subdistrict was a William J. Beaven.)

Edit: The 1910 directory has a John Evan Lewis as the Registrar of Births & Deaths. I suppose the first initial could be a J with a funny little tail, but I wouldn't want to put any money on it. Perhaps you can find another directory nearer the date of the inquest, or some other reference to the registrar's name?

They can be very troublesome, can't they? Many a Lawyer turns out to be a mere Sawyer. :)

Capital/uppercase Ps can cause problems also, I once sent for a birth certificate for a Searles ancestor where the surname was spelt Searls, the Chelmsford Registry office sent the cert with the explanation that the particular cert was for someone named Pearls not Searls. Fortunately I was sure of my grounds so I asked them if they could check other certificates penned by the same Registrar, the reply came back that what they thought was a P was in fact the way the Registrar in question wrote his Ss.

Sorry Chimp, I can't contain my excitement lol
P.S. The inquest cuttings for Eliza Legge are also in there!
I wont give too much away but I reckon there is enough info in these diaries to keep both of us busy for years to come!
Enjoy the rest of your holiday and I will speak to you when you're back.

Terry, with regards to e reason behind the split in the church, as it was a baptist church have you tried contacting the Baptist Union they might hold some records? I know you are still on holiday but it will give you something to do when you get home

Hi @LianeH apparently the split occurred because the members of the old chapel were straying to far from the word of god. Not sure if it was the stalwart's or the strayers that built the new chapel.

I will have a lot to do when I get home. @Andrew Davies has offered to share with me his grandfathers diaries, someone has asked for help tracing their family, another wants a copy of one of the articles on my site (concerns the sister of their grandmother) I put copyright on it and don't know how to take it off. Plus 2 weeks worth of washing. I will be rushed off my feet
