    Here's one for the new year.

    My great aunt would like to know about her gg grandfather. She reckons he probably made straight hoops like his son did. (it is a thing, I googled it)

    What she would like to know is where and when he was born, and anything about him as the trail goes cold with him.

    The only thing that is fairly certain is that her g grandfather Charles was baptised in April 1819 at St Peter and St Paul's church Fareham to Robert and Sarah Watson.

    I think that this is Sarah Hillyer and Robert Watson who married 1798 in Alverstoke.
    They are possibly the couple who had 5 children in Soberton (but nothing else to link them to there) then Charles was the last of 3 more children born in Fareham

    Although I can't find Sarah's death, Robert may have then married Martha Williams in 1824 in Alverstoke and had 5 more children in Fareham. There is a death in 1839 Fareham that could be him.

    All this looks good, but it all feels circumstantial. And there is no clue as to where he came from. Anyone have any ideas?

    Has he been found in a census at all?

    No, Martha is just with the children in Fareham in 1841, I assume he had died: HO107; Piece: 389; Book: 3; Civil Parish: Fareham; County: Hampshire; Enumeration District: 3; Folio: 36; Page: 7;

    That lends credence to the death that you found in 1839.

    I wonder if it would be worth taking a punt on the certificate - might give you his age at least....

    Have just found what I think is the burial for this chap:
    Died 20th June 1839, aged 66, buried at St Peter and St Paul , Fareham, so born roughly 1773.

    Might be a starting date for you. :)

    Robert Watson age 66yrs [born 1773 buried 20th Jun at Fareham St Peter and St Paul.

    Looks very promising Annabel, the age would be about right for someone marrying in 1798, and it's the same church his son Charles was baptised.

    Fab thank you. That makes her 16 when she married :eek:. Does that mean there would be a marriage allegation to look for. Where could that be?
