I have found a 1911 census, did Henry die or am I just clutching at straws.

Yes, he must have. Here is the marriage of Maggie Hooton, Widow, to Joseph Smyth in 1892. It gives Maggie Hooton's father as David Harvey same as on her marriage to Henry Hooton.

AM it was remembering your post where Smith was mentioned. I searched the Ireland census and up she popped.

But hang on. She was mentioned as the daughter of Mr and Mrs H Hooton of Aldershot. Not the late Mr Hooton. Which makes one assume they were both alive.

Maybe they just split up and she went back to Ireland.

It was 1915. That would make Mum a bigamist. It was probably just the way it was reported in the paper.

Actually doing a search for a marriage on there for Margaret Hooton brought up '0' finds.

I did a search on Margaret Harvey and one came up in 1892. Going in and looking at the record it showed her name as Maggie Hooton.

Back then it was known as a poor mans divorce. My great grandfather did the same. His second wife was a marriage of convenience. He needed someone to take care of his children. He married my great grandmother a few years later. His second wife was still very much alive.

Great find - no wonder I could not find them in the UK census.

Molly May, can you read where they were living at the time of their marriage in 1887?

They were starting to do my head in. I couldn't find any trace of them either. It was just a whim search that revealed it all.

This could mean that she really was the only surviving child of their marriage!!

I've tried looking for a death of a Margaret Smith in Cavan but there are 211 of them. Good luck going through each one.

I'm going off holiday clothes shopping today so can't help, sorry :)
